SciFi channel HD??

I have to wonder if Sci Fi channel deserves this much discussion. As mentioned more than once, UNIHD for one, has picked up the better (if older series).
From what I've seen of the more recent Sci Fi series, not sure HD would be that much of an improvement. I think it's become more of a 'cult' channel. I used to be a fan at one time, until this whole world of HD, plus DVD selections, opened up enough alternatives that I just don't bother with it anymore.

I guess the idea is for one or two other channels to be dropped and the material moved over to a Sci-Fi HD channel. But I doubt it. Purchasing and showing old reruns is cheap.

I am reminded of "The Wall".... "I've got 13 channels of sh%$ on the TV to choose from".

I guess if that song were written today it would have been 300 channels of sh%$. :D

Now you've done it

Boy is this thread gonna open up again. Some ppl really love the channel & want it in HD yesterday. I watch some of the shows on it and the HD version can not be had anywhere else even in a delayed playback. Some examples are Dr. Who, Eureka, & Flash Gordon.

Dr. Who, Eureka, Stargate Atlantis, and BSG are pretty much all I watch on SciFi. The original movies are pretty hit and miss. My cousin starred in one of them and I couldn't get through the first 20 minutes.

Doctor Who especially for me. I am a huge fan. Although I have to say the original movies on Sci-Fi are a guilty pleasure of mine. I love B-movies. They aren't afraid to take chances on a unique story line, unlike Hollywood which has to stay to "safe" tried and true story lines in order to ensure a profit.

Doctor Who lost me this season. The first two seasons were hit-and-miss but I liked the actors and there was the occasional really good episode. This year its been pretty much a run of B-grade X-Files type episodes and I can't be bothered anymore. I'm also not buying the Doctor/companion chemistry this go 'round, it feels quite forced and that's the core of the shows drama, ihmo.

I've been reduced to BSG and Eureka. For some reason, even though its fluffy, Eureka works for me...unlike the recent Doctor Who's. I think that Doctor Who works when there's still a legitimate dramatic core and a sense of danger/mood about it--when you camp it up you lose the draw of it. Go look up the old show opens from the 70s on YouTube and you'll instantly see what the tonal difference is.

Did I give any indication I was joking? I would really like to know if there is any time frame for E to carry it.

I hope you didnt tell him/her that

I don't think his mother even watched... Dragonfly.

Seandudley,

Let me get this straight you actually believe Scifi is going to be in HD because DirecTv (the DBS company that has been promising hundreds of HD channels for three years now) said they are going to have Scifi HD. Sure, DirecTV will have Scifi HD but not in the NEAR TERM, since it doesn't exist along with the majority of the promised HD additions in their HD list.

If DirecTV provides a channel labeled as Scifi HD in the next few weeks it will be 100% SD 24/7 labeled as HD.

DirecTV can NOT provide HD from a provider that has yet to even have a date as to when they will even offer a HD service.

DirecTV has been playing very fast and loose with the facts. DirecTV signed an agreement to carry Scifi in HD from VIACOM along with numerous other networks before these signals are even available. DirecTV will likely add HD channels as soon as available, but that doesn't mean other providers won't add the very same channels as they become available.

I think a lot of DirecTV subs are going to be REALLY Pissed come the end of September when DOZENS of the DirecTV promised HD channels don't show up in HD. The simple reason is that these channels are NOT YET available in HD from the content owner.

John

Well John your batting 1000

When DirecTV announced Sci Fi HD back in January, I actually called the publicity director at SciFI in New York, and she had absolutely no idea what I was talking about - she was shocked that it would even be announced; and while she could have been acting, it seemed genuine.

The Universal Media Village Website - which is where all of the Universal channels have their official media presence, has shown NO indication of SciFI HD at all. The rumor that flies through our site is that Universal will shut down Universal HD and replace it with Sci FI and USA HD channels. And while that would be a good thing, the only thing I can think of that gives me hope of that, is that Universal HD hasn't updated its schedule on their website; they have done nothing but show reruns of movies that they have shown again and again (I mean, come on, who the hell wants to watch Calendar Girl for the third or fourth time  ). But none of the news sites is giving any indication about Sci Fi HD; Futon Critic, Zap2it, TVWeek, Variety, etc...

And you too rocky. The publicity director sure knows her information

In the print version of the October 1-7, 2007 TV Guide distributed in the Sacramento area, it shows in the listings for Thursday 10/4 on the Sci-fi channel @9PM...“Species: The Awakening” as being in HD..............now what’s up with that?

I like how all the posts about no way on Sci-Fi HD showing up on D* in October have died down since info was posted on what satellite NBC/Universal will have it on. Kind of reminds me of all the E* folks that said no way would The Weather Channel be up in HD on D* there is no such thing but it's been there for 6 days.

10 Minutes of HD make a channel HD I guess, but worthless for the most part. Dish has a couple like that too, SD versions in stretchovision.

Don't waste the bandwidth on this until they have more substantial offerings.

Case in point TNT Stretchovision !!!

TWC has very little HD until sometime in 2008.... According to their press releases, they have no HD until 2008 but seem to have a small amount now. SCI-FI has no HD launch date according to their network information line. they answer emails, maybe they don't know and only NBC universal has the information ?

You had stated previously that TWC was 100% an upconvert until proven wrong. Now you say 10 minutes of HD make a channel worthless, but you're wrong again. TWC has two 1/2 hour shows Epic Conditions and Weather Ventures, both in HD and airing every week night. So wrong again.

Then you mention TNT Strechovision, yep they do that to their 4:3 shows but not with their 16:9 source material which they do have and it's more then 10 minutes a day and I guess you don't watch the NBA with TNT covers in HD.

I'm glad you weren't around in the 60's when TV networks were just starting to migrate to color, I can hear you now b*tchning now that CBS should stay B&W until they have all their shows in color.

I don't watch sports, unless it has an engine and don't watch that channel because every time I have turned to it, it's stretchovision which looks like crap. Ok,so they have 1/2 hour per day, missed it by 20 minutes.

I guess if a station broadcasts an HD commercial per day, then they are HD, lol

I enjoy B & W, the munsters were great !!! As well as lost In Space !

Back then, guess I really didn't care, actually now, I don't really care, but unless a network offers substantial HD content, they should wait to launch until they do, not just launch because someone else put them on the spot to launch. Not just direct TV, but A&E is just about as bad on Dish..

Still can't get it right, two 1/2 hour programs = 1 hour. Time to add you to ignore.
