I've been reading with much interest both Cascade's 120cm 'Baby BUD' and PSB's 40" C Band threads. Right now the focus seems to be on the Cone shaped scaler rings.

Now for the offset dishes the cone shaped scaler makes total sense.

I'm trying to understand how the ring helps a prime focus dish.

I found this site:

http://members.ij.net/packrats/Article_9/DISH_AOG.html

This site talks more to the offset dishes, but it does gives formulas that might be helpful for those of us brave enough to 'roll our own' conical scaler.

I'm interested in what effect the size of the ring and the spacing / height of the rings has on improving c-band signals.

I've got an ASC421 on the way but I don't expect much from my current dish. If it works, cool. If not, it'll sit in a box until I can pick up a 1.2m dish.

One more thing - are any of you covering the open end of the LNB?

This should explain it better. Satellite Feedhorns, LNBs and Polarizers
But in short, it cuts down on ground and side lob interference.

You mean the open end of the feedhorn, right?

Yes. It keeps out insects. You don't want wasps or other bugs to build a nest in there.

Thanks, I'll read up.

and yes, I meant the feedhorn. I should have said LNBF (it's integrated on this particular one).
