SatelliteGuys.US DishNetwork Uplink Activity Discussion - Week Ending 12/22/2007

Yea, well, I know nothing from uplinks but figured I'd throw it out. Thanks for the reasoned response to a post made part tongue-in-cheek, part out of frustration.

BTW: are we to infer from the reports posted for the last couple of weeks that SciFi-HD and USA-HD are still occupying those two valuable slots? Can you make any sense out of that?

=NLK=

Here's a link to 110 sort by TP. Scroll down to TP 17. Don't pay attention to the DRM channel, it is a mirror of one of the PPV's and isn't taking up extra bandwidth since it points to the same video streams. SciFi and USA have their own video streams. The big give away is you'll see after taking away the DRM channel you have 6 HD's on one TP, which is what these encoders handle.

Wow. They are cramming them in there for some reason.:)

We'll have to get Scott to make a poll asking 61.5 people about the quality of the HD channels listed on TP 22. I'd be curious to see the reactions....especially from the ones that don't read the uplink reports. A true poll.

I see very little change so far. But TP22 has always been the weakest tp for me. I will keep an eye on it.

For those interested in checking out PQ at 61.5. The channels on tp 22 are:
9419 A&E
9427 Universal HD
9429 National Geographic
9458 Cinemax
9491 History Channel
9499 TBS
9508/9509 NBA TV

Looking at these channels, I see why Dish did this. 3 of them have crappy SD stretch-o-vision and 1 has a decent SD upconvert most of the time.

See ya

If this works for E* it will no doubt be the solution to their national HD bandwidth situation for the forseeable future, whether we like it or not.

I'm suprised they didn't test 7 mpeg4 HD feeds on one TP before this move...

I think the reason digi wants a REAL poll and not the ones that look at the uplink report, is because if we see some information and look at a certain channel, We can talk our selfs into anything.:)

p.s. Universal hd looks better to me already.:D

Well this would be a way for them to get some more HD up and running until they get some new Sats up. But if they put things on MPEG4 the PQ should not be effected any..

The biggest test will be how things look during a live NBA game. The next NBA TV HD game is the Lakers @ Knicks on Sunday Dec. 23 @ noon ET.

That's a good point. I wonder if E* is considering adding more HD channels like this (F/X, TWC) and putting 7 on each TP??

This should open ALOT more room.:)

Well, I would quibble with your assessment of the channels. Certainly TBS has little to nothing HD but History and A&E (which I assume were the targets of your barb) are actually showing more and more HD, or what passes for HD these days. I don't think E* can rely on them broadcasting little to no HD in the future.

However, and especially with some of the stations we don't have yet (e.g. SciFi-HD, FX-HD) to the extent they broadcast mostly stretched crap it's POSSIBLE that 7 channels can seem closer to six.

A&E and History show about two hours each of true HD programming or at least full screen un-stretched programming a day at best.

I agree as time goes forward, these channel will show more and more HD. But if it is, as some suggest a way for Dish to fudge more HD channels on the system in the short run until the new satellites are launched and operational, then I'm all for it.

Natl. Geographic and Cinemax look pretty good to me. Don't know about the other ones since they don't really have much HD content. I think Tony hit it righ on the head when he said that they could get away with 7 HD channels because most of those don't have too much HD content.

I am not a expert what so ever. If a channel is using up convert sd to stretch or hd, I would think it is still using the same bandwith with either.
