SatelliteGuys.US DishNetwork Uplink Activity Discussion - Week Ending 09/01/2007

I think both companies will stay even in the HD race, Dish will always claim the lead as they have the VOOM channels, but to me the majority of VOOM is filler material.

There is only so many times I can watch the (great) concerts on RAVE, or the same monster movies on Monsters HD. I consider the VOOM channels demo channels now more then anything else. The only one useful is HDNews.
I think most people are too busy to actually sit down and see what is really on Voom. They hear about shows on other channels, because those channels are watched by millions of SD viewers. Then they watch that show in HD if they have it available.

While there is a lot of repeats, there is new material. I just tuned to Rave to check out what it looks like in MPEG4, and they are showing a concert with Original Air Date 6/29/07. There is continually new material - just not at the rate one sees on a Broadcast Network.

Clearly not a lot of people on SatelliteGuys interested in Fashion :D, but my wife is, and UltraHD has hours of the runway shows that only celebs can get tickets to. On September 7, they start showing the "Spring 2008 Collections".

And, there is a major exaggeration of the HD content of the non-Voom HD channels. The example I like to use is A&E-HD, which shows endless upconverted SD 4x3 versions of their SD channel (some of which are available in HD, such as their reruns of 24) - only a few hours a day are true HD.

I've read that not only is the NBC Nightly News the only one in HD, but their reports from the field are still always in SD.

We are still a year away from anything other than major primetime shows and sports being in HD. I think that the 2008 Olympics will be the big catalyst.

PS E* just freed up the strongest transponder on 129...
A total of 12 new HD channels can be added to 129 due to changing Voom to MPEG4. Are there 12 new HD channels launching in September ? I don't think so.

Very good point!!! watch out for Charlie. I heard he is a very good poker player.:)

I noticed several additional HBO's, Starz', Showtime's, and Cinemax' in HD on that list which is definitely something I'd like to see Dish add. That's just simply getting more value for your pay movie channels. I've been quite concerned that Dish has been VERY quiet on these channels while trying to add national channels that have very little actual HD content on them. I'm a movie buff and I want my movie channels in HD.

Absolutely agreed! I'd love to see more premium movie channels in HD. :)

I thought those suckers weren't going live until 2008.

Hummm Wondering what they are doing with CSNCHD? Hopefully there testing the channel for a perminate 24/7 run? Or it could be there just to warm up a transponder for some more HD!

Good question. I myself am wondering why I don't get FSN-Bay Area HD yet. There's already a placeholder (channel 369); it's owned by Comcast, just like CSNChicago is; and there's tons of HD games on.

I can only think that Dish is protecting us from the unholy messes that the Giants and A's seasons have become.

Are we still expecting HistoryHD to be turned on tomorrow or will it be next week? The press release did say September 1 right?

I'm sorry if this is a rehash:

I noticed this in one of the later reports:
EchoStar8 110W TP 17 ConUS beam 8PSK added to tables
EchoStar5 129W TP 06 ConUS beam 8PSK added to tables

Are these 2 available national TPs that could be used for HD? That's what I'm getting from this change.

Cheers,

Echostar 5 129 TP31 has also been cleared up but was removed. I would assume they can add it again if they need to. That was the strongest TP on 129. :(

And just for clarification on the TP adds/removes on the reports.

If you see an add on that report for a new TP, you'll see the channels above that were added or moved to that TP.

If you see a remove of a TP, then channels were moved off of this TP.

This report does not reflect the actual physical transmitting status of these TP's.
