Retailer Chat Recap: July 9, 2009

Effective August 1st New and Existing customers upgrading to HD will get the PlatinumHD package FREE with the underlying HD add on package. It will appear on the bill as HD & Platinum for $10 a month.

Now word of if existing customers will see their bill go down $10 a month who already have HD. (If not then I will drop my HD package before August 1st and readd it and save myself $10 a month!)

What about existing customers without Platinum HD currently? Will they get it too?

So I have to drop my HD package (Gold & Plat) this month just to readd it Aug. 1st so I can save $10/month? That just sucks! Give us long-time subs a break too, for cryin'-out-loud!

Does anyone have an authoritative answer as to which Dish receivers will be affected by the TIVO controversy? ....

No. Until the court options have been exhausted, no one can say definitively. But I strongly agree with Harshness, above.

And the appeals court "strongly disagree" with the judge's order to disable those DVRs, otherwise they would not have stayed his order to disable them:) The basis for granting the stay was most likely that DISH had establised "strong likelihood of success on the merits" on appeal.

Regardless, the DVRs will not be disabled.

DishNow Prepaid hardware will be sold through July 9th.

The prepaid cards can continue to be sold, there will be a transition plan to move prepaid customers to another system such as DHA TOO or Flex TV.

Delaers with Pre Paid equipment in stock should get rid of it now as it could be a doorstop on August 1st.

They say dishnow promotion ends July 31st, So what does any of this mean?
We know it means no new customers but it still seams pretty unclear what happens to existing dishnow prepaid boxes on Aug 1st. Seems dish does not even know yet.

In typical dishonest marketing form prepaid is still being advertised on their website as of today. Guess they want to move the remaining inventory of MPEG2 QPSK doorstops.
Pre Paid Satellite TV Available From DISH Network

If prepaid cards can continue to be sold what happens to any unredeemed cards Aug 1st if the system is shut off for existing subs.

Of course the critical questions are ignored by dish! Too messy to deal with.

We know that as of today the dishnow boxes are not receiving critical guide updates and the following channels are missing prepaid flags and do not appear despite dish's knowledge of the problem.

Any word on the HD/Platium change?

Will there be a 10,00 credit for exiting subs or is everyone dropping there HD and then readding there HD and Platnium on August 1st???

Does anyone have an authoritative answer as to which Dish receivers will be affected by the TIVO controversy? I have read reports that say it will be only the older models but I assume the the technology used in my 722 is relatively the same. The company will NOT give me a straight answer to the question but, rather, they refer me to the "Charlie Chats."

I wouldn't loose any sleep over this unless you have a 721 or 942.

Heres one that don't make much sense to me...

Effective August 1st, new customers living in a Western Arc DMA and subscribe to HD programming must be installed with all MPEG4 equipment...

Well DUH. :) (I dont know of any MPEG2 HD programming being broadcast by Dish) :)

What they mean is any additional boxes (SD) boxes required in that household, even if they don't require HD, must be an MPEG4 box. This does make sense if they are trying to migrate in the most economical way from all MPEG2 to all MPEG4. This has been a stated goal of Dish, but they have never given a specific date. It will take years, but if they can get the MPEG4 in as many homes and have subs pay for the upgrade along the way, then there will be that many fewer MPEG2's that Dish has to swap-out for MPEG4's that Dish pays for.

It doesn't look like they made too many big changes. It's such a pain to try and learn new promos when you just getting use to the old promos. I think they're moving in the right direction with the mpeg4 equipment. I just don't know why they didn't do this a year ago. Makes no sense to not sell all mpeg4 equipment to new customers.

I think they are shooting themselves in the foot with the $30.00 per month remaining cancellation fee. No way I'm doing any equipment upgrades and have a new commitment. Might also scare new subs away (if they find out about it).

I can also tell you about this, from my trying to upgrade to HD. They are requiring all MPEG4 boxes NOW! I won't even go into the unbelievable hoops they were putting me and then the installer I called through, until I finally gave up and am not upgrading.

But to the point of the all MPEG4, they will not allow me to keep my paid for 508 in the bedroom, and get a single TV HD box for the living room. They insisted I get a dual HD box. I was about to give in and use the second output for my slingbox when they informed the installer, what they meant was, they would no longer supply me an MPEG2 signal if I upgraded, so I had to do it their way -one dual box. I don't want one box, if it fails then no TV. They would allow me to get a dual box and a single box (Both HD - MPEG4) but that increased the total cost too high fo me in this economy. So I will stay with my two 508's as long as possible......I have an old RCA HD receiver that I use for over the air HD and will live with that.

Do existing Customers have to call?

Scott(or anyone else in the know)
For those of us who have Classic 250 plus HD (Gold) and platinum already ,will we be automatically put into the new package(HD and platinum)or as existing Customer will we have to contact Dish and have are programming charges adjusted.

It says new and existing customers will get the add on pkg . So arent all of us existing customers. So currently I have turbo gold. So doesnt that mean you can go online in your acct and change to say the top 200 and add the hd pkg for $10 and get the platinum for free . It sounds like saving $10 . Just a simple few clicks. It sounds like they are or will eventually do away with turbo pkg. I guess because of programmers give them a hard time adding like fox,fox business , and now MSBC hd to the turbo pkgs. I say they should go back to a simple plans such as directv does. Add hd pkg for $10 and do away with platinum hd all hd channels included into add on pkg which sounds what are doing after aug 1st. I checked yesterday to see what it would cost to change to top 200 and keep both hd pkgs. I actually would save $2.00 a mos. They really need to do away with the turbo hd pkgs hopefully they will.

Though does that cover those like me who already have HD, will we be getting platnum included now, from some of the early posts I thought I read that it would not cover those customers. If that were true that would not be good customer service.

I know Dish has had issues like that, but it sounded like at the Team Summit they were going to move in the right direction for customer service. I guess I we will have to see how it shakes out August 1st or if anyone talks to anyone at Dish and gets there take on it.
