Retailer Chat from CES

No I do not expect to know everything about before it ships, but if it is making news articles as a soon to be shipping product they need to at least clue the CSRs in a tiny bit. Something along the lines of "We announced extensions to the Joey line coming in a few months, please refer any customer inquires to www.dish.com/superjoey"...
This is not uncommon.... Many companies will tightly control the information available until the item is "shipping". That's what Dish is doing here. I'll bet you that anyone who talked about these new Joeys was told clearly what they can say and what NOT to talk about.

They want to keep as much of a head-start as they can on competitors too. Even some of the features that they've publicly given on these Joeys will have already been looked at by DirecTV, for example, and people are asking "can we do that or add that feature?".

Well they went over the new equipment and it was just a review of the same info that's been released. Here is a review of what was gone over.

Virtual Joey:
Must call Dish Customer Service to set up the Virtual Joey.
There is no cost for the Virtual Joey App but there will most likely be a monthly fee for the access.
No word on a price. Somewhere between $0 and $7.
It will count towards the 6 receiver limit that is stated in the business rules.
Only one Virtual Joey can be active at a time.
Dish will send you a compatible remote.
Launch will be sometime this Spring.

Super Joey:
PTAT
AutoHop
Remote Finder
VOD
Two tuners
Integrated with the Hopper
No word on how many Super Joey you can have
No word on price but will be between $7 and $12
No word on Pip yet
Should launch this Spring

They mentioned they thought the launch could be mid March, similar to when the Hopper originally launched.

I did get a few answers at the end of the webinar.

Only 1 Super Joey per account
No PiP for the Super Joey
A Super Joey will not be allowed with 2 Hoppers
There will be one remote that works for the Virtual Joey regardless of which device you are using it on.

Seems odd the SJ has no PiP?

SJ not allowed with 2 Hoppers? What if you purchase your own? Will they activate it?

No idea but they may. Three to four Hoppers isn't suppose to be allowed either but people have them. I think it's more of a business rule for basic installs and it may be able to be done if purchased. I will not know for sure until the product is out and we actually try installing it.

That was a popular question about the SJ/2 Hopper set up, I wondered that myself but Scott asked and with MOCA bandwidth issues could not work

I had additional tuner aspirations myself :)

That will be kinda odd and convoluted. The same remote for the PS3, which uses BT, and various devices using IR, and maybe UHF?

Or will they require converters, to take a standard IR signal and produce BT?

My guess is that it sends the signal back to the Hopper and not to the device that has the app.

I'm willing to bet someone from Satellite Guys will get it done. Perhaps it will even be you, blazing the path for others as you have in the past I'm thinking.

I figured the same thing. We will have to wait until the product is out and people try to push the limits of what can be done. Just remember, as soon as something is figured out you will see it posted on here.

Yah I'm still on the fence about attempting to add a SJ to my 4H setup, lol. Gotta have more info.

I wonder if the SJ can be placed behind the power inserter? If not that means I have to buy a third switch. Gets expensive fast.

That will introduce some distance limitations. And still require the PS3, etc, to be started and setup using original device remotes.

I'm willing to bet that the VJ remote will be a new 41.0 or somesuch which has BT capabilities. At least, that would make the most logical sense. Why bother with a converter if you don't have to?

...to be started and setup using original device remotes.
I realize there's limitations and that every remote will differ, but nowadays the stock remote (with TVs, for instance), would probably suffice. Imagine if you needed an "Amazon Prime" remote, "Netflix" remote, "Hulu" remote, and so on to use with your smart TV, BD player, Roku box, etc ?

Actually I do need to use the Roku remote. I have the Roku 2 XS and it is a bluetooth device. My Harmony isn't bluetooth, although they do have a remote that is....

I did find an App for my iPad Air that I can use as a Roku remote, complete with keyboard use while searching....
