My friend has an H10 receiver. He's no longer a DTV sub. The hard drive is bad, just spins up and down, but never starts. I wanted to know if we could replace the drive and he could just use it to record OTA?

The H10 doesnt have a hard drive in it. I have one and use it for OTA only (along with my D* sub and the R22)

If there was a HR10 (DVR version) you should be able to record OTA. You do need a continuous satellite connection too for the receiver to work

so wouold he be able to record OTA since that word "tivo" is there (and we know how tivo loves to work with nothing when not activated)

No because he only Has the "H" version and not the the "HR or R"
And Tivo don't work without activation at all just like you mentioned.

He would have to confirm, I would Imagine if he hears spinning, he Must have the DVR.

Even still He won't be able to access recordings or even record without it being activated.
I'm not even sure the OTA is anything more then just a Pass through?

Since I haven't used OTA since my RCA D* receivers , I can't say for sure about the Tivo's.
