Regional sports networks

as I posted to the same question in the DIrectv area

once you get outside of the "main" area of the RSN there is an additional fee the providers pay to carry it. (think extended area). I assume the "extended" starts/stops at the OH/MI border
Directv chose to
Dish took the cheap route and wont pay it

same thing in Duluth, MN. Both the Brewers and Twins claim the area (meanwhile across the river in Superior, WI its just the Brewers). Anywho Directv gives you both, dish only the Twins in Duluth

Dare2be if i go by the "maps" link i saw earlier(highly outdated) I shouldnt even be receiving Cardinals (Local cable offers it so we ARE in the region) and I should be also be receiving Houston Astros which i was until Comcast bought the TV rights. The maps need to be updated just an FYI.

Maybe i should stop complaining about getting 3 teams in my area. WOW. Houston used to be the 4th...

When I "lived" in Beckley, WV for a while, I was getting Root Sports PIT as my local RSN. When I subbed to Multisport, I could also watch Reds games on Fox Sports Cincy (not blacked out). Are you saying Dish paid the extra for the Cincy RSN in the Beckley market, but did not pay the extra money for FSDetroit in NW Ohio?

pretty much yeah
there is a difference between getting it as part of the base package and getting multisport.

Due to bandwidth restrictions we are unable to provide all sporting events in HD 24/7. The game may be joined in progress (JIP). Here is a link which may help you in the future. http://www.mydish.com/gamefinder/

The entire Pre-game/Game was broadcasted in HD with the commercial account in the same zipcode on Foxsports Midwest. But Subs without the MSP dont get the HD feed well over 25% of the time. Zipcode: 74074 Cardinals.

Right, but would someone in NW OH paying for multisport then be able to see non-blacked-out FSD games?

I don't want to sound like I'm mad at Matt as I knew that company answer was coming.

Like I said, as long as Dish keeps dragging their ass on reclaiming the mpeg 2 space and being forced to carry bundles of crappy channels with loops of the same old crap this will continue. If costs keep rising and the main reason for the rising costs are the sports channels then they should be in HD for all games. Turn off the PPV and Porn channels for 3.5 hrs during the games if need be.

Then you would have angry porn watchers. As for the shopping channels, they pay dish to air them. So I'm not sure dish would cut off a company giving them money.

Then you have mad college students and guys trying to get some with their side squeeze. Lol. That's when I use it. But cutting out something that has a following without any sort of monthly commitment is unlikely with any provider. Sports fans are "religious" and although mad about the JIP, will make it work one way or another.
I think they could cut back on the number of movies offered, but I know that whatever their reasons, they do indeed have their reasons.

Its not even about JIP. Its about making sure an HD feed is available for all qualified viewers in both teams markets. Thats not happening.

No one is addressing the original question. How can one provider black out a team in a certain area while another shows it in the same area? Most of us were led to believe that the local market is determined by the league or team, yet if different providers have different blackout regions for the same team, it sounds like blackouts are also determined by contracts between the MVPD and the channel owners.

Didn't the OP say he was getting the games when he had DirecTV in a different region. He moved and then switched to Dish. I don't think it's a matter of it being Dish or DirecTV but the fact that he moved to a different region that has those games blacked out.

No, he said he had both Direct and Dish in the same (NW OH) location. Then moved.

It got confusing for a while. He had Dish at one time and then Direct in OH and the RSN games were different. Now he is in WI with Dish and is definitely out of the coverage area for the Tigers.

I can answer your questions on why RSNs vary in the same area. It all depends on the providers contracts and the negotiated TV contract. They are not bound to carry RSNs, they either choose to or not. Many times rights will change after a carriage agreement is signed.

For example when Turner South became SportsSouth they picked up more Braves games. DirecTV agreed to pay the additional fee they wanted for those games, Dish didn't. So viewers in Braves territory didn't see them. Also in many cases teams "claim" territory outside their own markets. DirecTV provides RSNs in these extended areas, again Dish doesn't want to pay so you don't get them.
