Redskins name controvesy

The ruling isn't forcing them to change their name. The government can't do that even if the NFL can. What they did was say that the trademark was no longer valid. This means that other people can use their logo now. If they change it it's because the owner doesn't want to deal with the controversy anymore or because the NFL decided for them.
If they decide to change it will most likely be due to financial reasons brought about by the trademark decision. If enough revenue is lost by themselves and the other teams that share in merchandising (all other teams except the Cowboys), pressure will be applied....

Not 100% correct. They wouldn't have trade mark protection, but they still have common law protection.
Gerben noted that it "would not be open season for anybody wanting to sell Washington Redskins merchandise," adding that "there are federal and state laws that would still allow the Washington Redskins to police their trademark and to sue others for trademark infringement."

the patent office should pay more attention to bogus patents and stay out of something that has been rejected years ago... Political Correctness is a slippery slope, someone is going to find something offensive everywhere.
Once again, this was not a unilateral action. It was a ruling to legal action taken by plaintiffs.

BTW, the Trade Mark is still registered through the appeals process.

If the Redskins lose the rights to their trademarks, the question will be whether state and common laws would allow them to retain their exclusivity of use.

"The law is really unclear on this," said Sonia Katyal, the Joseph M. McLaughlin Professor of Law at Fordham who specializes in intellectual property. "We haven't really had something like this where you have a team and so many other interested parties involved, so we're treading new ground."

Patent Office: Redskins 'disparaging'

Like I said if they change it fine, if they dont so be it. I do find it a little interesting that there's this rush to change the Redskins name by all these politicians. I mean I didnt know are country was doing so well that they could focus on stuff like this.

Pirate isn't a pejorative term for any race of people. Redskin and the n word are.

My great grandfather was full blooded Cherokee Indian,my wife also has Indian blood lines on her side of the family, neither of us nor any of our extended families are offended by the name Redskins.

Of course it isn't forcing them,my point is they are trying to intervene period.Take away the money and in essence they have forced their hand.See my point? The government has way bigger fish to fry than appeasing 15% of the native American population.

Tarblooders were usually African Americans but was the term ever applied as a pejorative
/ Just asking. I really do not know.

During a time at the turn of the last century, it was strictly a pejorative for a mule-like black man, in both working ability, perceived lack intelligence, and stubbornness. Yes, it was a pejorative, though never wide-spread. In this day and age, most people don't know what the hell it means! :) The last game I covered with the team, the media relations guy must have explained it 50 times to fans and other press.

Their problem was that they never got the official seal of approval. Notre Dame did, and they've never had any trouble. It's all about going through the proper channels, people!

CBS Sports' Sean McManus: NFL Announcers Might Not Say 'Redskins' On Air
There is a lot of pressure on the Washington Redskins to change their name. How will CBS analysts address that controversy this fall?

We haven't talked to them yet. Generally speaking, we do not tell our announcers what to say or not say. Up to this point, it has not been a big issue for us. Last year, it was simmering; now it's reaching a hotter level. But we probably will not end up dictating to our announcers whether they say Redskins or don't say Redskins. We leave that up to them and our production team. There are times when something becomes important enough that we talk to them, and between now and the start of football season we'll decide what is the right thing to do.

My question to those "offended", just how has the name hampered your life? Did you keep you from getting a job? Did it cause you to lose a job? Did it ruin your marriage? Did you suffer financially from the name? Does it cause you not to sleep? Did you develop depression or anxiety? Has it caused you to be admitted into a mental institution because of the anguish? Just how has the name Redskins being used by the Washington football team impacted your life in a negative non football fan way? I am appalled how MANY people portray and what they think of Southerners. Guess what? I either laugh, shrug it off and call them idiots, or I make fun of them. But, my life is not impacted by what people say. Who cares how derogatory that term is in today's society. If you are letting it impact you and getting so mad that you want to hit someone, well, that is on you and nobody else. How sad it must be to let other's have that much control over your open joy or happiness.
