I know this may be a dumb question but I have a VIP 211 receiver and was curious if it is possible to record to an external hard drive since I noticed it has a usb 2.0 port on the back of it. I know it's possible on the dvr that I have, but would like the ability to record on a second receiver that being my VIP 211.

Thanks!

Welcome to SatelliteGuys! moved to Dishnet forums... the ViP211 record and play to External HDD is being eagerly anticipated by all... but has yet to show up.
It's release has been announced three times and three times it didn't show up when promised.

It's been nail biting time for us would-be 211 EHD users.

Being able to record and play from an external hard drive will make it a DVR by definition and therefore subject to Tivo's lawsuit/injunction. We won't see this feature until Dish buys Tivo to end the stupidity.

Don't spread misinformation. You have lots of assumptions in there that may or may not be true.

Assumptions:
1) adding external hdd will make it subject to the tivo lawsuit
2) adding external hdd will make it subject to the current tivo injunction
3) Dish is going to buy Tivo
4) we won't see this feature until 3 occurs

I count 4. Should I have said several?

Will the added functionality promised in the past but held up even though demonstrated some time ago make the 211 a DVR?

Is there a Tivo lawsuit / Injunction pending currently against Dish DVRs?

I didn't say Dish was going to buy Tivo - BUT - I do think they can save themselves a lot of trouble and expense and make some money if they did.

I bet if 3 did occur, 211's would see that DVR functionality become available pretty quick.

You should stop by the Tivo thread going on right now in the Dish General forum and see if you can stop the disinformation there too.

Has anyone tried this on a 622/722? The menus have it as an option, just have not tried it.

Record to external device on the DVR just sets the video output so that an external recorcer like DVHS or DVDR can pick up that video signal and record in real time.

It doesn't send a recording to a hard disk.

722 DVR. Any limitations to size on External Drives?
