Not to state the obvious, but if you know someone with an iphone see if you can put their sim in it for a few seconds so it can activate the phone, then your good to experiment.
One more question:
Now that I'm running iOS 5.0.1, and it has an option to turn off all data via the cellular network, and direct it only through wifi (if available), is there any reason I shouldn't put my live AT&T sim in the phone and use it as a ... phone!?
AT&T may not have a book of IMEI's for T-mobile phones.Just a couple of months ago I unlocked a T-Mobile Galaxy S I got and turned the data radios off.
I gave it to my dad to use on ATT, as he just wanted a nice phone for easy texting and wifi occasionally when they travel.
He hasn't received anything yet about putting data on his account for that phone.
Yea, in most cases, you cannot even get a nice smart phone without paying for the big plan!...but everyone wants you to buy data packages now whether you will use them or not.
I did watch the video, and I did open the phone again.
Yes, yes there is. As soon as you put your SIM in that iphone it will report its IMEI to AT&T and AT&T will automatically add a data plan to your account. There is NO (legal) way around it.
Thanks also to Kettlepot who PM'd me with the ultimate piece of the puzzle.
How to carrier-unlock the phone with with ultrasn0w, on iOS 5.0.1, and baseband 6.15.
Poison_David seems to have the answer on page two of this thread at GSMhosting.
So, for anyone following my adventures and feeling sorry for me, there ya go! - :up

I might give it a go myself. I've been afraid to upgrade to iOS 5.x
But the multi-tasking in 4.3.3 really ticks me off, it eats the battery and that's just uncool.... There's no need for multi-tasking. It's a freaking cell phone!
The other thing is, you can't shut off Carrier IQ in 4.x You have to go up to 5.x to be able to disable it.
Good job Anole and thanks for the link..
My Motorola RAZR V3i is 5 years old, and still running on the original battery.Your battery issues may be due to an old battery.
True, just using the only two data points I had.Seems to me there is a huge difference in expected battery usage out of a 5 year old feature phone compared with a smartphone that sucks down juice every day, due to constant email/web/other data usage. I think 3 years is probably on the long side for expecting a smartphone battery to maintain the same juice as it did on day one.
This was what I needed to know. Thank you!Double press the home button and it will open a slider at the bottom of the screen where you can see a list of all the apps that are being multi-tasked.
Touch one and hold it until they start wiggling. Red minus signs will show up on each one. Touch the minus signs on each app to kill them from multi-tasking.
Kill them all. It will not hurt anything.
Another thing, go into Cydia, search for and install SBSettings and SBSettingstoggles..
SBSettings gives you a drop down menu where you can toggles things on and off and you can kill running apps and free up memory.
Between the double press on the home button and SBSettings, you can shut off all the nonsense and extend your battery between charges.
After i upgraded from 3.1.3 to 4.3.3 my battery really was burning out fast, like in one day. Before it would last at least two days on standby between charges.
True, just using the only two data points I had.
But in my test, I wasn't actually DOing anything with the smart phone.
With real use, it would perform worse.
A new battery has been on my to-consider list from the start.
Just wanted to get a little field experience with the existing one, first.
This was what I needed to know. Thank you!
I know about SBsettings.
Was going to install it, but wanted to walk before I ran.
So, the regular Settings program seemed like the place to start.
It's large and convoluted, but didn't seem too hard to manage.
I'll go ahead and try the SBsettings and see what it does for me.
Okay, I did the double-tap of the home button, and killed off maybe a dozen apps.
Only left Angry Birds. Hope that wasn't a mistake
Remember, I'm on a tethered-jailbreak, so I don't want to reboot the phone.
Charged it up last night, didn't touch it except for the power readings, and here are the results:
-10:00pm = 100%
- 4:30am = 70% - 30% down in 6½ hrs
- 7:30am = 40% - 60% down in 9½ hrs
Not really acceptable in my book.
Do I need to cycle the battery a few times, kill Angry Birds, or put in a new battery?
