I will go out on a limb here and say that this would be a tad bit of an upgrade over their current home at Tropicana Field.....

This is just rediculous. Their place now isn't very old. Why would they need a new place?

The place they have now is downright hideous and depressing. It's also in a bad location. In no way does Tropicana Field do anything to inspire or promote baseball in that city. When my Indians play the Rays on the road, I cringe at the sight of the field.

Now this new, open air, unique, on-the-water facility would do wonders at attracting an audience and a consistent crowd. Plus, the article states the plan for funding doesn't even involve the locals to pay for anything through taxes. Instead, the majority of money will come through the sale of the land and parking lot of the Tropicana Field site.

IMO, it's a win-win for the city of St. Pete, the MLB and should be a jolt to an organization who could use a decent welcoming after being the joke of the league since their inception in 1998.

The only problem is that their plan for parking is a complete joke. They plan to build a four story garage that can hold I believe around 1500 cars. Beyond the above the entire St. Pete area going out about a couple of miles only has about 3000 public parking spots total. Even the garage will require that everyone walk close to a mile each way to reach the stadium.

I love the idea of a new stadium but they need to first find a better parking system maybe with some form of transportation system before anyone would consider going often. I'm talking about new people going often not the existing die hard fans. Also if MLB really wanted this team to compete they would move us out of our current division ASAP. If anyone expects the Rays to compete with the Yanks, Red Soxs, Orioles and the Blue Jays they are crazy. Yes one and maybe two of them maybe and that is a big maybe but not all of them. We just will never see the type of payroll these other teams have so our only chance is for all of these teams to completely mess up on their spending and player selection along with "all" of our young talent playing lights out the entire season. If that were to happen we "could" win but assuming we did get that miracle we would lose all of those young players as these same teams would buy them all. I cannot blame a player leaving for 20+ million bucks and this will be exactly what will happen.

Simply put this is why I have never cared for baseball because the MLB system is not our pastime from my point of view.

As a resident of St. Petersburg and a non-baseball fan, I DO NOT want to end up paying for this new stadium in any way. I love my city and take pride in the successes of it over the last 15 years, as the high rises go up and a real skyline has began to develop. The waterfront, which I used to jog along daily when I lived downtown is top notch. It is a wonderful place to live. Having that said, I don't think this thing is right for our city. In all honesty, I think they should move the Rays over to Tampa, which is the center city of our metro of about 3 million citizens and is home to our other professional sports teams (Bucs in the NFL and Lightning in the NHL, and oh yeah, an arena football team). The major league baseball team really belongs in Tampa. Let Tampa build another stadium and pay for it. We have enough waste in St. Pete as far as spending. I don't care what their plan is, we are going to end up paying for some of it.

And yeah, parking is a serious issue. As I said, I used to live downtown and when there are big events, there is a real parking problem. I can't imagine a baseball game letting out just two blocks from where I used to live several days a year. It would be like the 4th of July or New Year's fireworks letting out over and over again with traffic and parking nightmares.

I have been to Tropicana field for several events, including baseball games, expos, and concerts. It is not that bad. It is certainly not top notch as far as a baseball stadium is concerned but neither is the crappy team.

Maybe if the team started winning some games and for once actually made the playoffs I would change my mind. Nah.... still don't care. Still don't want to pay for it.

So OK.... if they do decide to do it, I seriously think they should use the old site for a new mall. There are over 500,000 people in the immediate St. Pete area (not in the city limits, I mean south county) and there is one crappy mall (Tyrone). All the good stores are at Tyrone. And although it is only ten miles by way of my odometer, it is a minimum of a 30 minute trip with the traffic congestion on the way there. We need more stores closer to the city center. Use that gigantic lot and stadium space for a new shopping center with a Best Buy, Borders, Costco, JC Penney, etc... We have plenty of places to eat on this east side of town (including downtown) but we are too far from the chain stores. They are talking about mixed use, with a few stores, housing, office, etc. For those of you that don't know the city, this giant lot is wedged in with Interstates to the west and south of it and on the other side of the south Interstate is the medical district and entry point to the ghetto. to the north and east is downtown, but several blocks from the high rise office building part of downtown. It really would be best used as a shopping mall. The condos are fine when the remaining sh*thole houses are torn down but condos and office would not even look good on that corner where the Tropicana field now sits.

So, if they move the team to Tampa or get there way with the stadium, they should turn the existing property into a mall. Maybe an open air mall.

Heck... just move the team over to Tampa and forget all this nonsense.

Stadiums (stadia????) are pretty disposable these days. If I recall the old stadium was built to attract a team (over MLB objections) but is now considered inadequate. Personally I think that this franchise has more serious problems to address but if the team and the citizens of the area want to build another stadium so be it.

The local papers may have you believe the citizens want a new stadium, but we don't. Sure, some people do, but not a majority of us. Hopefully, they will put it to a vote and put it to bed once and for all.

I also believe your 100% correct. I've talked with hundreds of people over the last month and not "one" of them said they liked this idea. I as you have read don't like this idea at all. Heck the last time I went to the Imax downtown on the weekend the fricking parking garage was full and because I bought the tickets online (no refund) I ended up having to park about two miles away and take a damn taxi. From that point on I've never went to the Imax on a weekend or for any show after 4pm. Seeing a show at 2ish "and" getting validated parking in the garage is nice though. They never used to validate but I have no clue how recently they changed this policy. Maybe when nobody went to see movies they changed it lol.

Ah well I guess I never noticed those signs but I also didn't go very often until the Imax was built.

You know what... they were doing it for a while without advertising it. I used to live six blocks away (2001-2003) in a high rise apartment and my brother was living in the same building. I used to walk everywhere downtown and told the lazy bastard he was lazy for driving to the parking garage, which was even closer than Baywalk itself. I told him he was wasting money too, thinking he was paying $4-$6 to park in that damn garage. He advised me that they had $1 parking if you presented your movie stub. There were no signs indicating this but it worked. Later on the signs went up.

I used to go to Baywalk all the time but since buying a house north of downtown (near 62nd) I usally go to the Regal at Parkside now the few times a year I actually go out to the movies. I have not been to Baywalk since they opened the Imax... I'll bet that is nice. I've been meaning to go and maybe I will take my older son when the next big action blockbuster comes out.

I saw something in the paper yesterday about some guy who has come up with a design for "bringing down the Trop." So they are already working on demolition plans for the Tropicana Field. I just love how they assume that the voters are going to go for this. They are jumping the gun on this.

Mayor Rick Baker- I DO NOT WANT TO PAY FOR A NEW RAY'S STADIUM IN ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM!!!! NONE. PUT IT UP FOR A VOTE IN NOVEMBER AND I THINK THIS PIPE DREAM CAN BE PUT TO BED ONCE AND FOR ALL.

The team belongs over in Tampa, which is the center city of our metro and more appropriate a place to host a professional sports team. Let Tampa build a baseball stadium over by Raymond James where the Bucs play. They can share a parking lot, security, vendors, etc. This whole idea of breaking promises and a team threatening to leave and renig on a 30 year lease is sick. The Rays suck money and they suck at their game. Let Tampa handle them and put that Tropicana field lot to better use as a shopping center.

Goodbye Rays, you will NOT be missed by me.
