I want to estimate how high my dish should be put from the ground.

My question is that is the elevation degree number (got from lyngsat.com) the actual angle between the beam and the horizon level?

For example, if the elevation is 20 degree, my dish should have a clear distant to the obstruction (a tree) at least 1/tan(20) (about 3) times to the height of the obstruction. Correct me if I am wrong.

Thanks,

As for your question about elevation, you are correct. As for your trig part, I don't know, I don't like trig, go away. :)

Elevation

Thanks a lot.
Sorry for the trig part. My house is so close to neighbor's house. I just have to be careful without unnecessarily damage the wall by trying many times. I need to put the dish just higher enough to get the beam. The dish is big (90cm/36") and heavy, I don't want it is blown away.

Is the dish motorized or are you just going for one sat? If you are going for on sat it should be easier because you don't need a clear shot for a given range. 3' should do you well.

Good luck!
