Question about DVR and HD

Okay, this is a very dumb question and I'm pretty sure I know the answer but I'm going to ask just in case, by chance I can get lucky here..

I don't have an HD TV so it doesn't matter to me if the DVR records or doesn't record in HD. HD programs take up a lot of room on the DVR, is there a setting I can change to the DVR to have it record HD programs as non HD programs so I can have more space on the DVR?,

You could try to record the SD version (which may or may not be smaller), but I do not think there is a way to change the resolution or the compression method of the HD channel recording to lower the end file size.

In the menu settings there's a selection to hide the HD channels. This way you'll only record the SD versions. But, as stated, the file size may or may not be smaller.

Why not get an HD TV?

If you are recording only the sd versions of the channels you will use a lot less room than the hd channels will. I think it's something like 1/4 of the space.
