PS3's Does ANYBODY still want one?

Its funny you say that because I am at a point now that I know it will be years (if ever) that some HD titles I want will ever be on HD DVD. I've been thinking about getting a PS3 for purely a BD player. Doubt I would buy any gave, one possible exception would be GT.

But then I recall reading about there being a 1080i incompatibility with the PS3 (did they fix that?). Since I have a 1080i/480p component-only HDTV, 720p wont do me any good. So in a case like this, is a PS3 targetted to someone like me? Or am I better off finding a full Blu-Ray player as cheap as I can find one?

I don't really know about the scaler problem. However, I've decided that it is just not worth hundreds of dollars to watch movies in HD instead of upscaled DVDs. I'm going to wait until I know which format is going to win, and players can be had for less than $100.

Br will only play in 1080i so you are good there, the problem is scaling a 720p game up, not scaling down.....so if you are getting a Ps3 solely for Blu ray you are good to go, and I would recommend it as its a decent player, and heck you might just buy a game or too.....UNfortunately it just wasnt for me, so I am back to the 360 (by the way I didnt realize how much I missed gears till I fired it up again!)

Thanks for the comments. Disappointing that Sony screwed the pooch so badly on the upscaling of 720p. Did they forget that many of their HD sets couldnt do 720p from a while back? Oh well.

Its just too bad that the dual format LG is so crippled, and not even HD DVD compliant. Guess for now I will just wait and live in the HD DVD world from my 360. :)

That may be a very long wait. Below $100? I know there's talk of the Chinese pumping out no brand HD-DVD players in a year at that price point, but I don't believe it.

So which format is going to win? Well it looks pretty good for Blu-ray right now. But if it's true that Sony is preventing the porn industry from using BD, then that right there pretty much guarantees that HD-DVD will stick around.

I don't think either side has more than a 55% chance of winning at this point. And yeah, I've decided to wait a long time.

PS3's inventories are starting to stock shelves and floorspace around me. Today in my travels to Bestbuy, target, Meijer, and Circuit city (I was looking for a good dvd recorder with HDMI output btw not PS3 shopping).

Anyways, in total I saw IIRC 64 units. 24 of them at Bestbuy alone. Sony is really shipping this stuff out now. I honestly don't know if no one is buying or supply is just much better now.

Btw, not a single Wii anywhere.

Well, I certainly intend to wait. But I've looked around online and it looks like the story of Sony keeping porn off Blu-ray was overblown. So if that's the case, and as many BD movies come out over the summer as is projected, we may have Blu-ray as the winner by next Xmas. But nothing is certain.

Like you said, we can wait.

I think the story was the porn was choosing HDDVD, not that BD wanted porn off BD. But I don't think that really matters. I would guess the internet is the center of porn these days.

I would be surprised if either BD or HDDVD had even 1% of the market by next Christmas. I don't think that quantity of movies is the deciding issue. Neither has a huge advantage there. I think it will be cost as well as how common HDTV becomes. Of the three other people I know with HDTVs, not a one of them has any HD source hooked up to it (I am not including myself in this). People just don't care that much about it.

I've read that about one third of American households have at least one HDTV (or is it "digital" TV?), but only about half of these actually feed it an HD source. From what I know about my friends, I can believe it. And to think, digital OTA is almost everywhere analog OTA is.

One story had the adult industry, or some companies in it, choosing HD-DVD because it was "cheaper." Other stories mentioned one of the larger companies choosing Blu-ray, and then not being able to get a duplicating facility to run copies for them. Supposedly they feared Sony would pull their licenses. Since there is porn in Japan on BD, that seems unlikely. Plus Vivid, the largest producer of adult videos, is releasing on BD this month. We'll see if that really happens. Lotta guys bought PS3s, and they're the prime market for adult videos.

All good points. I just can't believe that porn will have much of an affect on which kind of player people will buy. Today is not like when VHS and Betamax were battling it out. Back then, people were getting their first real chance to be able to watch porn in the privacy of their own home. As long as there is some porn available for HDDVD and BD, I don't think anyone will worry about which studio is supporting which. Maybe I live in a bubble, but I have never heard anyone talk about how great one porn company is in comparison to another.

I agree, I don't think it will have the effect it did when it tipped the scales to VHS. But it's still a large enough market to where if Sony DID keep porn off BD, there'd be enough of the porn market alone to keep HD-DVD hanging on (at the least).

Not everybody has broadband. And can you download an entire adult movie off a legal web site? Or, err, does anybody want to download more than a few minutes worth?

I saw 4 60gig ps3's at best buy in boca today.. then I turned the corner and saw another 2 full I'm guessing 3x5x6 stacks of ps3s.. definitely plenty available here.. not like people don't have the cash to buy it here either, from what I hear theres a lot of returns from kids that wanted the wii not the ps3

People are stupid...

or they aren't..... Many believe that the only thing compellin people to upgrade to next gen DVD is the fact that they can't convince people to buy the Star Wars DVDs (and other discs already released 3-4 times)AGAIN, unless they make them hi def.

IF you have an HDTV, and IF you have a decent surround sound receiver, and IF you can't live with 480p when 1080p is out there, then the upgrade makes sense. I'm one of the early adopters who chose a side. However, the vast majority of people don't care, and won't spend $500-1000 for the incremental upgrade. PS3 and XBox 360 provide a little hope, but the discs have to come down close to DVD price levels, hardware prices need to come down further, AND they need to resolve the format war before most will make a commitment to moving forward...
