PS3 Network Down?

I posted this in the pub but should do so here too.

I discovered on Saturday that I could push past the sorry can't log in message when trying to access Netflix and after 3-4 tries using the circle back key, was able to bring up the Netflix menu and watch some movies. Once in, you don't get the error message anymore until you back out to the PS3 desktop. DK- see if that works for your MLB access. I didn't try for Vudu or Hulu yet but I wouldn't be surprised if that works similar to Netflix.
Thanks for reposting this info.
HIFI mentioned the same thing earlier in this thread as well
strange! I hit the back button from the error and up popped my netflix.
edit tried several movies, the retrieving bar goes 1/4 of the way and stops.

I am expecting a little bit of tangible retribution from Sony for this aside from just a simple "Sorry, thank you for your patience." People have thrown out the argument that we aren't entitled to everything since this is a free service and that only Plus owners would have a legitimate beef, but considering how many features are down AND considering they pulled this on the same weekend of two very high profile releases (Mortal Kombat and Portal 2) I think we're owed a $5 or $10 credit for this hassle, or even better, 1 free month of Playstation Plus.

Interesting point, probably could get a credit for Playstation Plus since it's hasn't been accessable and it's been paid for.

I'll have to remember to call and ask for it.

The biggest beef Hollywood celebrities have with Sony, is having to pay list price for high end electronics/gadgets...:)

It worked for mine with netflix as well, I tried it yesterday.
When I get home I will try the other apps.

Just checked out VUDU and that worked fine too. Same procedure of backing out of the login error message and up pops the selection. However, when I tried Hulu+ I got a message that I needed to download an update first so I did and that worked OK. But then I still could not log in and also could not back out of that login error page. I reset the PS3 and still no Hulu+. The PS3 just locks up on the error page.

Netflix and Vudu OK
Hulu+ no go!

At least I have 2 out of 4 accesses. For me, that's 99% of what I use anyway. :)

So true! When I was a Hollywood celebrity, I had the same complaint too. Now that I'm long forgotten, I pay what I do and stopped whining about it. :facepalm

Netflix works?? I tried yesterday and I get a message their working on the server.

It will. You simply go open netflix up and it will start loading. The PS3 will try to sign you into the PSN. Hit circle, and it will back you out of that process while netflix is still loading. It will try to sign you in again, and you repeat the process until you are in netflix and it no longer tries to sign you into PSN. Takes about three tries on both of mine.

Talk about clueless...
Sony unsure if PlayStation Network user data was stolen ? The Register

Here is my "conspiracy" theory:
When hackers finally learned Sony's favorite random number (it's 4 for those that don't know; always the same :)),
Sony at first had no clue where this will take them. As they brought in people that actually knew what "random" means, they started realizing in how deep sh!t they are.

The case against Hotz came to life for one reason - to actually understand what the hackers know. This is why it triggered such heated debate about computer hard drives and its content. The moment Sony legal dogs had everything they could get, the case became useless and was settled. The very fact they didn't make an attempt to silence him is the best proof of it.

It looks like what they learned was an eye opener. "Rebuilding the playstation network" seems the only cure.
And Sony still has no clue who broke in, when, what was taken and when all this will be fixed.

Another textbook case: security through obscurity doesn't work!
Having a new unique CPU (Cell) isn't enough to keep hackers at bay given enough motivation...

PlayStation(R)Network

===================================

Valued PlayStation(R)Network/Qriocity Customer:

We have discovered that between April 17 and April 19, 2011,
certain PlayStation Network and Qriocity service user account
information was compromised in connection with an illegal and
unauthorized intrusion into our network. In response to this
intrusion, we have:

1) Temporarily turned off PlayStation Network and Qriocity services;

2) Engaged an outside, recognized security firm to conduct a full
and complete investigation into what happened; and

3) Quickly taken steps to enhance security and strengthen our
network infrastructure by rebuilding our system to provide you
with greater protection of your personal information.

We greatly appreciate your patience, understanding and goodwill
as we do whatever it takes to resolve these issues as quickly and
efficiently as practicable.

Although we are still investigating the details of this incident,
we believe that an unauthorized person has obtained the following
information that you provided: name, address (city, state, zip), country,
email address, birthdate, PlayStation Network/Qriocity password and login,
and handle/PSN online ID. It is also possible that your profile data,
including purchase history and billing address (city, state, zip),
and your PlayStation Network/Qriocity password security answers may
have been obtained. If you have authorized a sub-account for your
dependent, the same data with respect to your dependent may have
been obtained. While there is no evidence at this time that credit
card data was taken, we cannot rule out the possibility. If you have
provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity,
out of an abundance of caution we are advising you that your credit
card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may have
been obtained.

For your security, we encourage you to be especially aware of email,
telephone and postal mail scams that ask for personal or sensitive
information. Sony will not contact you in any way, including by email,
asking for your credit card number, social security number or other
personally identifiable information. If you are asked for this information,
you can be confident Sony is not the entity asking. When the PlayStation
Network and Qriocity services are fully restored, we strongly recommend that
you log on and change your password. Additionally, if you use your PlayStation
Network or Qriocity user name or password for other unrelated services or
accounts, we strongly recommend that you change them as well.

To protect against possible identity theft or other financial loss, we
encourage you to remain vigilant, to review your account statements and
to monitor your credit reports. We are providing the following information
for those who wish to consider it:
- U.S. residents are entitled under U.S. law to one free credit report annually
from each of the three major credit bureaus. To order your free credit report,
visit www.annualcreditreport.com or call toll-free (877) 322-8228.

- We have also provided names and contact information for the three major U.S.
credit bureaus below. At no charge, U.S. residents can have these credit
bureaus
place a "fraud alert" on your file that alerts creditors to take additional
steps
to verify your identity prior to granting credit in your name. This service can
make it more difficult for someone to get credit in your name. Note, however,
that because it tells creditors to follow certain procedures to protect you,
it also may delay your ability to obtain credit while the agency verifies your
identity. As soon as one credit bureau confirms your fraud alert, the others
are notified to place fraud alerts on your file. Should you wish to place a
fraud alert, or should you have any questions regarding your credit report,
please contact any one of the agencies listed below:

Experian: 888-397-3742; www.experian.com; P.O. Box 9532, Allen, TX 75013
Equifax: 800-525-6285; www.equifax.com; P.O. Box 740241, Atlanta, GA 30374-0241
TransUnion: 800-680-7289; www.transunion.com; Fraud Victim Assistance Division,

Deter. Detect. Defend. Avoid ID Theft or reach the FTC at 1-877-382-4357 or 600 Pennsylvania
Avenue, NW, Washington, DC 20580 for further information about how to protect
yourself from identity theft. Your state Attorney General may also have advice
on preventing identity theft, and you should report instances of known or
suspected identity theft to law enforcement, your State Attorney General,
and the FTC. For North Carolina residents, the Attorney General can be

telephone: (888) 743-0023; or Maryland Attorney General - Home Page.

We thank you for your patience as we complete our investigation of this
incident, and we regret any inconvenience. Our teams are working around the
clock on this, and services will be restored as soon as possible. Sony takes
information protection very seriously and will continue to work to ensure that
additional measures are taken to protect personally identifiable information.
Providing quality and secure entertainment services to our customers is
our utmost priority. Please contact us at 1-800-345-7669 should you have any
additional questions.

I think we're owed a $5 or $10 credit for this hassle, or even better, 1 free month of Playstation Plus.
And that's what you are going to get...
Update: We're hearing that Sony's "goodwill gesture" may not be an incredibly significant one -- affected users can expect a free 30-day subscription to PlayStation Plus and a free software download of some sort, while Qriocity customers will get an extra 30 days of service on the house.

..and a month of Netflix and Hulu for me, since I only use them on the PS3, plus $20 in card change fees that I had to pay for my new credit cards, plus the credit monitoring, and so on, and so on. They owe a lot of people varying degrees of compensation over this.

You people who say Netflix works for you, I don't know why but I can get as far as my queue, pick a movie, and it starts loading, then it tells me "There was a problem communicating with the Playstation Network. Please try again later." This isn't a PSN error like you get when you try to sign in, it seems to be in the Netflix program. I also tried using the old disc-based Netflix and I get an error: "Cannot connect to Netflix. Please try again later." Hulu doesn't even try to load, I just get the PSN error 80029516 "Sign in to Playstation Network".

I also get the same error on the ps3 in the livingroom. I think its because I never verified that PS3 to use netflix, while my other slim, I have always streamed netflix on it and it works with PSN down. Shouldn't have to wait much longer as PSN is scheduled to come back on this week.
