Probably going to upgrade to Hopper/Joey. I have some questions / concerns.

Be careful. I upgraded over a year ago and have had nothing but trouble. Every time I change hd channels I loose audio with my B&K processors. I have to go out and back in to get audio again. There is a problem with this hopper and hd audio to audio equipment and they do not want to come to terms with it. I have been fighting them for a year and a half with no answers except to just go mono. And when I want to change to other equipment on the same grade as the hopper they say they are having problems with them too. Stay with what you have or if you want to change go with another company. I have been a dish client for about 17 years. Seams like it is a new company once they get you under a contract they just throw you away.

Folks have bad experiences with any company. I've been pouring over the forums & I don't see the issue you describe as a growing trend. That's not to make light of your experience, just what I see.

In another off - topic thread, someone stressed the importance of having 3 ghz coax going to the Hopper. All I know is I have 130' of orange dual coax that is designed to be buried without conduit & it is RG6. It's what the installer brought when the 1000.4 was installed 3 yrs ago. The line is buried. Should I be concerned?

Does anyone else want to chime in with regard to the audio issue Erobpaint describes? Particularly those that are using AVRs?

His issue must be with optical output which is a known issue, or a problem with his audio gear. If audio is through HDMI, no problems whatsoever.

HDMI through an Onkyo AVR and never a problem. As far as wiring, if Dish is doing the install, let the tech check your current wiring and install new as needed. With the ota module, you can currently only do a complete scan. The ability to add a single ota channel has not been activated yet. So if you set an ota timer and then do a rescan, uyou will have to reprogram the timer.

Easier said than done. I doubt he'll be replacing and re-burying the 130' of coax that's currently there.

So I can't delete the 10-15 religious and marketing channels after I've scanned? (I don't intend to record OTA in any case. I just use it for local weather or when DISH has a dispute with a network.)

To throw a fly into this soup; I've had a HWS since early May. I use its optical out to my Yamaha RX-V995(y2k). No issues with losing audio as described ie; changing HD channels.

You can block any channels you don't want to see including OTA. Cables from the dish to the node don't have to be 3 Ghz, just the cable from the node to the Hopper.

Cool, thanks.

Oh, then no big deal. That's just about 3' of cable that goes through the wall. It is well protected and looks find and is well secured/caulked, etc. If it's the right kind of cable, then I'll leave it up to the installer's discretion.

You have a point about buried cable. As for the ota religious channels, you can't deselect them yet. But you can create a favorites list that hides them and any other channel you don't want to see.

I find channel blocking is better, you don't see them in any list.

Both my HWS go thru different model Onkyo AVRs using HDMI. No problems.

We upgraded our 2 Hoppers to 2 HWS earlier this summer. HWS 1 in FR connected via Hdmi to Denon AVR has no sound issues. HWS 2 in MB connected via optical to Yamaha AVR exhibited audio dropouts almost immediately when changing channels or fast forwarding. Changing channels or skipping back again would bring the audio back. A search here revealed several others with same exact issue. Our work around for now is a Monoprice Hdmi splitter that has optical out that strips the audio from the Hdmi stream. A bit inconvenient but works. Dish is supposed to be working on a fix.

If Dish can't or won't fix this Optical Audio Problem, they should supply a HDMI Splitter free of charge. I really think no one on Dish's Technical Staff knows how to fix this. I hope I am wrong.

Ummm, HDMI cable will not solve, especially if someone's AVR does not support it.

I think he is referring to the HDMI splitter I mentioned. It is actually a HDMI switch with 4 in and 1 out. It splits the DD audio from the HDMI stream and sends it to the AVR via optical and sends the video to your TV via HDMI. I know of at least one other person using the same solution. It is cheaper than buying a new AVR with HDMI switching for a bedroom system that gets light use.

I wonder what percentage of people are using optical. Back in the old days of the big dish, I found a bug in the programing of my HTS Viii. Echostar decided it wasn't going to fix it, so they gave me a HTS9+ where the bug was fixed. Dish(aka Echostar) may feel that it isn't cost effective to spend the time to fix a problem that effects very few people.
