Probably going to upgrade to Hopper/Joey. I have some questions / concerns.

As a new customer I am pretty sure a HWS is what you'll get. If you want a 2nd hopper that's where you can choose the original hopper for less money or go with a 2nd HWS. According to many of our members here the HWS is faster than the original. That's something that is important to me but maybe not for others.

The HWS is reportedly faster than the original Hopper 2000. That alone should be reason enough to get the HWS, all other things being equal (even if you don't plan to use the sling or IPad transfers). I think HWS is standard for new installs, but you might want to make sure with the installer to be sure.

iPad, I believe, not sure about iPhone. Correct about everything else. Apparently Android transfers are in the works, but no timetable (if ever) for availability.

The only reason I use OTA is to tune into stations DISH does not offer me. I live in DFW DMA, so DISH provides DFW locals. However, I'm geographically much closer to Tyler, so the Tyler & Jacksonville stations are more appropriate for me especially when I want to keep an eye on weather. I don't record OTA.

You must not have every used a Harmony One remote. I will not part with it. It makes navigating my system a breeze for my wife. My system consists of DLP TV, AVR, 622, 722, PS3, XBox 360, VHS, and media player. I will keep the the Hopper remote, but it will be on her table so she can control volume, mute, and change channels as needed. Otherwise, each of us hands off the Harmony as we exit the living room.

???

I thought I heard 1080p is not an option. 1080i is as close as you can get.

???
If I has a need for the sub-channels then yes they would be there. I don't think it is quite as sensitive as the TV's tuner for the weaker broadcasts.

My low use of other remotes does not seem to require a Harmony one.

The 3GHz cable requirement you will find mentioned often here because they won't install if the only cable is not spec'd as such. To get the signals for 3 tuners requires band stacking with higher frequencies required than the 722 with its 2 tuners. The 722 external separator to split the 2 band is done internally on Hopper into 3 bands. Does that help?

The Hopper selection includes 1080i/1080p 720p 480i and 480p. I don't know if really does 1080p but the TV says 1920x1080i @ 60Hz, not the 1080i's 30Hz. I used 1080p with the 722, IIRC. There no basic difference except the frame rate for our purpose.

Tiles versus lists is a different way of working but the adoption rate you will find is quick.

The use of simultaneous EHDs can nearly double disk-to-disk copying speed and access to 2 drives instead of 1 is useful for those that archive a lot as I do or when you archive with one and view on the other--all not possible on the 722.

after I program my Harmony remote to control the Hopper, can the OEM Hopper remote still be used to operate the Hopper and can it be programmed to control the volume/mute on my AVR?
Yep....and there is something new you will love. (I went from a 722 to HWS and use both my Harmony 890 and the Dish OEM)

Since you are asking the question, then I am sure you are aware of what it took to set the Dish Remote to operate your AVR and then what was needed to "punch Thru" to set the remote to operate either the TV or the AVR's volume control.

Since the Hopper has two-way communications, under "Settings" there is an icon for managing your remote. (Yellow button-6 is your shortcut) Instead of putting in 3 or 4 digit numbers, you go to the remote settings page, pick your manufacturer from a drop down list and click "save" when the right code is sent.

However, on this same page there is a button for volume. Simple click on this and select TV or Aux and your remote operates either the TV volume or your AV receiver's just that quickly!

I also saw on a later post that you now understand that the newest version includes a built-in Sling. It has pretty much replaced the original but be sure you ask for it. As others have mentioned, it has newer chips that make it faster, but it also has a built-in WiFi which I found to be faster than my AV 200 Homeplug set-up.

Plus with the Sling, I didn't have to bother with another Joey for the computer room....I just dial up the webpage! :D

I am a Harmony user with a Hopper and a Joey in the same room (use the Joey to control and program a bedroom Hopper). The only way it works is for the Harmony to control one box and IR be disabled (via menu) on the other. Sorry. 2 Hoppers are so much better than 722/622s that you will get over the need to use one of the Hopper remotes on the other - the universal remote capabilities of the Hopper remote are quite good even though less than the Harmony's.

One some may not realize about a two-Hopper setup is that they are "connected" in that if they are on the same internal LAN (which they will most likely be) they can see each other, so you can view recordings on either. My brother-in-law and father-in-law have two Hoppers, one upstairs and one downstairs, and normally, they simply manage their own recordings. But if there is a recording on one Hopper that the other wants to watch, it's as simple as selecting the other Hopper and viewing its recordings guide. I don't think you can control (ie: schedule new or manage existing timers) on the other Hopper, but you can certainly view recordings.

One of us is misunderstanding the other. It's been established that a Hopper and Joey on the same TV is pointless, so I won't be doing that. I've also decided (I think) to start with giving back the 622 and 722 and just going to 1 Hopper. At which point, my Harmony One will be programmed to operate the Hopper but the OEM remote will be retained and used by my wife to control the Hopper as well as the volume and mute on the AVR. Typically, a Harmony user shouldn't add OEM remotes to the mix, but in my scenario, since the OEM remote will only be used while the Hopper activity is in progress, we won't lose syncrony. We've been doing this very thing with the 622 and 722 for several years. If one of us leaves the room, we hand the Harmony to the other person so they essentially "have the helm". My question was focused more on the Hopper's capabilities as opposed to the Harmony's. I wanted to be certain the Hopper would be operated by my IR Harmony remote as well as the OEM Hopper's remote and whether or not the Hopper could concomitantly operate the AVR in a limited fashion (volume/mute). I believe my question was answered and that it is possible.

Sounds like a plan.

When's your install? We're dying to hear how you make out.:)

Ditto.

I haven't pulled the trigger, yet. I guess I'll go back to chat to set it up, but I worry about the roulette. Despite what I say, or how succinct I am, I expect the wrong thing to be arranged, i.e. installer shows up with a Hopper & Joey, without Sling, etc.

I've never used DIRT. Should I contact one of them, since they seem to be a different breed of CSR, or is that misuse of their services?

Your fears are valid.
?USE DIRT. USE DIRT.USE DIRT.USE DIRT.USE DIRT.USE DIRT.

Not pointless for a Joey connected to a different HDMI port for setting timers, playing EHD recordings, etc. on a second Hopper in another room - only $7 mo. for the extra functionality. However, I only brought up the example to point out that a Harmony remote is useable with only one box in the same room with the Hopper/Joey system, because both respond to all IR commands unless you disable IR on one of them.

BTW, I would have 2 Hoppers on one TV if I had only one TV, because my wife and I need all the extra tuners. I would have LCD buttons on the Harmony remote set to Hopper1 and Hopper2 (HDMI inputs) and use the Harmony for Hopper1 and the OEM remote for Hopper2 - exactly how I use the Joey. Think outside the box.

I have 2 Hoppers on one TV and I don't even have an AV cable hooked up to the second Hopper. I just use it to record with and I access the DVR content from it. I set timers on that box using DA.com or Dish Explorer or Dish Anywhere on my iPad.

Glad I moved from 722 to hopper/joey

I was also hesitant, but the hopper kicks butt compared to my 722. The sling works 1000 times better than the 722+sling. Everything is faster and I am glad I upgraded 2 weeks ago. I also love that my external hard drive moved to the hopper with zero issues so I kept all my shows.
