Got a call from a friend who does a lot of DirecTV commercial work, and he was informed that commercial pricing was going up...

The Inroom Choice Package is going from $270 a month to $285 a month
The Locals Package is going from $34.99 to $39.99 a month
and ESPN is going from $3.85 to $4.25 a month.

He says this new commercial pricing goes into effect on January 1st.

With such heafty increases in the commercial realm, one can only wonder what is going to happen with the consumer pricing.

I easily expect a 5% increase. Working in the finance of my division I can understand these things. There of course will be many stating they are jumping to Dish or somewhere. I am not one for the promo games. However, if Directv announces a substantial HD lineup additions prior to the increase it will be relatively quiet.

In the end the D-12 has to be paid for somehow.

I don't work in the finance of my division but it's not to hard to figure out that DIRECTV will have a slight residential price increase in 2010. They have a small price increase every year, doesn't bother me. It's called inflation. The price of groceries goes up a little over time, the price of a postage stamp goes up, etc..

I'm not gonna jump to DISHNETWORK. :)

It's kinda funy each year when I see a thread about DIRECTV price increases and they'll be replies like -
I just called DIRECTV and changed my service to only the basic service(no premiums).

I cancelled everything and I'm switched to cableTV !

I can't take it anymore !!
I just got off the phone with DISHNETWORK, they're gonna be out on Wednesday to hook me up !! I'll get SHOWTIME free for 3 months.

Yes, its kind of expected each year, as long as the companies continue to add on things, its ok.

To be honest I dont see anything wrong with those responses as people are on a budget and some cant afford the companies raising prices for tv.

I would agree but, if $5 is the breaking point than you have much other issues.

to the other post on small versus large

Small 0-10%
Larger 11% or greater

A 10% increase reflects only a 10.50 in the premier package. I can find 10+ dollars of something I don't need if that is the breaking point.

Unfortunately every Feb comes with price increases. This is due to the annual contracts ending and renegotiated prices are put into effect.
If you don’t like price increase, well………….. yell at the programmers !!!! These are the people responsible for your increases not the providers.

Do you know what the inflation rate is in the USA for 2009?

It is below zero! There has been deflation in 2009.

Thus a 5% or so jump in rates would be WELL above the inflation rate.

Remember that many of the residential customers who are signing up now are supposed to be getting frozen prices for next year. Someone else is going to pay for that.

With churn near an all-time high, that's going to put some pressure on revenues as the elevated pricing won't apply to some not-insignificant percentage of the customers.

Price Increase due to Inflation?

What a bunch of crap that is! If you believe that, I have 4 bridges on the island I live on that I will sell you.

I don't know about you; but due to the recession I took a cut in pay this year. This country had so much "inflation" this year, that is was the first time in decades that Social Security Payments were not adjusted for inflation. Hmmmmmm  So tell me; where is the inflation costs for any video provider? They just have all their subs programed to accept a rate increase every year, "due to rising programing costs", while D* and TWC having very profitable years; and E* doing so well that it can pay a $2.00 dividend.

Their rising costs are adding all these new hd channels and compressing the hell outta them. We gotta pay for the compression, in two ways.

I see what you are saying, but what if its your third year of price increases, then its 15 bucks.....and to be honest 5 bucks is small to you and I, but the 65 year old retiree that might be larger then both of us think.

Prices go up every year $ 3-5 dollars.
You say a small increase is up to 10% and that should not be a breaking point ?
For some that CAN be.

My programming bill has gone up from around $ 40 to what will/should/could be OVER $ 60 in what, 4 years, $ 20 a month over that time IS alot.

That said, I understand that the sats have to be paid some how.

However, D* could , if they decided, to NOT raise prices with the current economy the way it is, but then we said that last year too and they raised it the same mount as every other year.

Other places D* could adjust prices ...... Why are we paying an addl. fee ( $ 10) for the right to have HD. The majority of the channels ARE in HD, when does this addl bill become STANDARD pricing ?

Another place they could adjust pricing, the Sunday Ticket, why charge an EXTRA $ 100 AGAIN for the rigth to watch in HD, thats the norm now.

How about giving us a package for JUST the NFL ST w/ HD, instead of forcing us to pay for the Fantasy stuff that I have absolutely no desire to have, or pay for.

There WILL come a time when I say the hell with giving the addl $300-400 for the ST.
Hopefully they will make adjustments to help the sub sometime soon, but I'm not holding my breath.

IF I'm not mistaken, the normal package of programming went from 48 to 58 in two years.

Can a current sub call in and get a deal that would freeze thier price ?
Once again, it looks like the existing sub would NOT be able to do that.

Where did D* say it was due to inflation ?
