Preferred Network Connectivity for the Hopper and Joey System

Anyone work with Homeplug adapters like this for network connectivity? I would think this would be preferred versus wireless bridge. Some provide 500 Mbps service.

Also, related to conversation on other threads saying Joey can operate without coax (although not officially supported by DISH) - would 500 Mbps suffice for quality video over network? What about 200 Mbps homeplug?

I will confirm all joey's will work with CAT5 only. It will default to coax everytime if it is plugged up too. I am using 85mbps homeplug adapters at all my locations and they work pretty well. There is some spotty parts where picture quality drops or it freezes. I think that is because I have a VERY cheap switch at my router and I am using slower homeplug adapters. I do think it would work a lot better with faster on higher bandwidth homeplug adapters as it would allow more bandwidth internally.

ps. I am using coax until I get my Joey to work right with sound. Then I will be moving everything over to CAT6 as soon as I get the house wired with CAT6 and all my gig equipment installed. Then it will all be networked.

Would I be able to use the same coax cable that has my internet (to modem/router) to connect to HIC? For example, get a splitter of some sort and combine the dish signal from the node and the internet signal (cox) run it through the existing coax and then split it again to the modem/router and HIC. So it would basically look like this:

I don't think that would work too well without a ton of interference from both internet & sat signals. A pair of diplexers would theoretically work better due the signal isolation, but I'm not sure what freq range the HIC uses or your ISP uses.

They both are on lower frequencies. So diplexer wouldn't work. Splitter would likely cause intermittent connectivity throughout entire system. Could you tie a rope or some dual cable to the existing line and pull it through?

WARNING: Connecting more than one H/J device to your home network/internet after the s213 update could result in serious stability issues with your entire H/J system. Connect only 1 hopper or use a HIC.

thanks to dfergie, the main post is now updated to reflect all the s213 firmware changes. The hoppers are acting as bridges with s213.

If you're having trouble with your H/J system, try disconnecting all the home networking/internet. Also try disabling bridging on the hoppers.

sorry for the stupid question, but what is a homplug adapter?

Home plug adapter or sling link plug (available on DISH website under store) are plugs like the netgear plug. You can use it with an ethernet cord to your router and to the plug itself. It then turns all the wiring in your house to a network interface for internet. The Vip series of receivers can see the internet through their power plugs on the receivers themselves and will show connected under internet menu. They aren't the best reliable plug for videos , in my opinion. I use one behind my router and I use netgear plugs in my son's room for his computer and my master bedroom for my wife's computer. It shows 100 mpbs for speed. Both computers work well. I use wireless for my roku, google revue units, Xbox and my toshiba tv with internet. I might switch the other two computers to wireless , once I can afford more adapters. But for now it works for my computers.

with the newest s215/s267 update, bridging will be turned off by default on the Hopper. Re-enable with the instructions below:
The default setting has been set to disabled on the Hopper. You can turn it back on at the Hopper location. Here are the steps on how to do this.

Yellow Hot Key
Select Network
Select Broadband
Select MoCA from drop down
Blue Hot Key twice.

Yeah I use the HIC.. Just makes it easier and you don't have to worry about having a Ethernet drop to all the boxes so less cable.

Thank all for the help
