scored me a couple powervu receivers (D9234 models), one with remote and one without...have a few questions

1. is it a bugger to program them w/o the remote?
2. I assume its limited to probably a TP at a time max or is it a channel?
3. will they output AC-3 as is?
4. I know they wont get the encrypted stuff but can they get the free stuff or did I get 2 doorstops?

I got the manual from the manual section so I gots some reading to do :D

Someone on Ebay had one listed that claimed it did 4:2:2. I highly doubt that. Ice, you will be the man of the week for confirming that fact (or myth).

I bought one that had no remote so I relisted it and got the same amount back I paid for it. Wasn't worth it to me and gave up on PowerVu. Now, if they DO offer 4:2:2, I may reconsider.

Now the encryption thing. I think the way these things are built, they have specific chips inside them that are specific to the provider. One box can view one provider but not another? I'm guessing.

Never heard about free stuff from PowerVu world.
Once in a while, they will FTE! :)

well it does allow you to program them and from reading old info they are interchangeable. When UPN used Powervu receivers it mentioned to program in AFN to get the newest software downloads

take everything from wiki with a grain of salt

PowerVu has decoders that decode signals from certain satellites for cable distribution services. These decoders can also be used just like the FTA (Free-To-Air) satellite receivers if properly configured. PowerVu is considered very secure and has not been compromised since it uses a complicated system to authorize each PowerVu receiver and trace its history of ownership and usage. Most PowerVu users are professional cable or satellite companies, using the service and equipment for signal redistribution, because regular users cannot afford it.

I assume they mean if programmed with the right info

The 9234 is used by AFRTS and several years ago someone in Germany published an article explaining how to use the AFRTS receiver also for FTA.

I had one of them about 5-6 years ago. I can't recall how but I think it had something to do with the ability to have different groups of network presets with each group having a number and then switching back and forth (Under User Setup Menu, Network Preset).

The specs say they can do 4:2:2 (only in SD resolution, they won't work for HD).

After I heard about someone snagging a 9234 and seeing what they can go for, I"m going to have to think about picking one up to play with. I can't imagine they are too hard to setup compared to some of the other receivers I've played with.

the one w/no remote should be here early next week....dont know about the other one

You may be very disappointed by their operation...If you need any other manuals not listed, speak up...Extra parts/Remote, pm...

The 9234's are Business IRD's...designed for PVu Network Bouquets that really do not exist much any more..FTA is a cumbersome config unless you save program models...not very flexible...therefor, you may be disappointed

I would have to try that with my powerview.. I still have mine from Iraq wich is authorized to recive AFN but dont have the cband dish to recive AFN as im in an apartment building. As soon as I get a house.... THen that will be diffrent.

eh I've been disappointed before from FTA boxes :D

We'll try it out and if it doesn't work out right they'll be back on Ebay

Yea, no kidding.
I've seen 'em discussed here before. (search for old postings)
As best I recall, they have a very manual setup for one channel.
And that's about it.
Not flexible at all.
You had to put in every technical detail about the channel you wanted -
Nothing was automatic, as we have come to expect in current FTA receivers.

But of course, if you had a bar which only showed one team's games, that might be fine. -
If you know one 4:2:2 feed you like a lot, that might work. (assuming a given box does 4:2:2)

If this thread documents any better use for these boxes, it'll be a real milestone! - :up

Bob...so as long as you had C-Band you could get ALL the AFN stuff up there?
cool :)

understandable :) Its not the first box I had to program dang near everything in. :D

Oh contrair my green friend. There are lots of bars in Wisconsin that only get the Minnesota locals (so no Packer games) who get NFL ST to show "only" one team

well lets see....if the box outputs AC-3 through the a/v cables (which I'm hoping) then as long as I can program it I'll be happy. There are some channels on C-Band that I do watch and it sucks when they are AC-3 because then I have to cripple either the CS8000 or the Q from watchign other stuff because I need it for the AC-3 option.

If it does AC-3 or even 4:2:2 I guess 10 bucks for one and 22 bucks for the other (before shipping) might be a cheap FTA box ;)

I'll keep this thread going as I get them in.

I was wondering about the 4:2:2 as well

I got the idea there is the normal powervu and then there is the ones that does 4:2:2 and somebody was claiming one box would do 8psk. But they seem to be different models and such. If I look at a normal powervu SA box. There is not much on it. But when you look at the back of a box that say 4:2:2 and 8psk they have alot more stuff on it. Loop back and stuff. I did this checking out the pictures on e-bXXX. LOL. So there might be something to it and yes. I notice from the manuals you have to enter in everything. But when you do scans and read lists. Most have everything anyway. Sortof like the quantum MSR units. Just more stuff to enter.

Later,

Josh

P.S. seems to be alot of powervu stuff on cband. I dont' have cband setup. So that stopped me from picking up a few good priced receivers. So I'm interested in what ICE finds.
