The good news is that with all these low cost alternatives, the big names are not going to be able to hold their premium pricing. They will have to come down quickly to be competitive.

Not worth even considering until they have HDMI 2.0 out of the box.

Since HDMI 2.0 is a finished standard I would expect that all the new sets announced and coming out in the next few months will have HDMI 2.0.

I wouldn't think these cheap 4k sets will have hdmi 2.0.
Even if they did what 4k material will get to the screen? I didn't think so:)
The bad thing is 95% of the people buying will be thinking they are 4k when it's only 720p or lowly 1080p:)
It will be similar to today when people watching sd or DVD think they are watching true hi def!

HDMI 2.0 is not hard/expensive to put in a set. It uses the same connectors and cabling, it is just a new decoder chip.

I understand. My point is most people buying this set would not benefit with or without hdmi 2.0.

BTW. I thought hdmi 2.0 update could be firmware update and not hardware.
Aren't last year Sony 4k projectors previously hdmi 1.4 due for hdmi 2.0 update?

Some sets are being sold with the promise if being upgrade able - hardware or software.

We've been down this route before. I don't recall the name, but it didn't work well then and won't work well now.

As soon as they start broadcasting 4k, they will compress the hell out of it, and it won't look any better than HD.

OTA broadcasting - so far off OTA might be gone by then.

Sat/cable: YEP!

4k looks good but no content some movies from over priced Sony 4k player.

What provider sat/cable will offer 4k 1st what's you guess?

My guess is DirecTv :)

Recall that when HDTV first came out, a number of sets were introduced that were "HDTV" with either component analog or DVI inputs. None of them anticipated HDCP and they all were quickly obsolete.

Basically, it ain't soup yet. If you must be an early adopter, be prepared to be burned. If you need a new 1080P TV, then what the heck, as long as it doesn't cost too much extra.
