You know, when the first trailer came out for this I thought it was an intriguing idea that could be a real game changer for Nintendo, but goddamn I did NOT expect this to take off like it has. Between the happy stories of people getting out and working together to find Pokemon to the horror stories of people finding dead bodies and getting robbed, this thing is EVERYWHERE. Hell while I was walking around my university where I work I'm pretty sure I saw 2 co-workers searching for Pokemon as well. I get the feeling they thought I was as well because I was staring at my phone, but I was just walking around looking at my twitter feed.

Is anyone here playing this? I'm not going to because quite frankly I don't have the time or attention span. I got 3 kids at home and a full-time job and less than 2 hours a day to play full fledged games. I don't see myself adding ANOTHER distraction to my limited time, not to mention that I don't feel like wandering around my town trying to find these things. I don't live in a high crime area but knowing my luck I'd be another victim of the various Heroin addicts that live in our area (sadly it's becoming a really bad problem in my state.)

I downloaded it while I was on the drive home from Canada after my fishing trip last week. I was traveling so I thought it might be a decent chance to get some stuff I normally wouldn't have access to since it's location based. I only got as far as setting up my account and catching my starter Pokemon (Pikachu) though. I was in a car all day and you are meant to walk around while you play so it wasn't an ideal situation.

I don't see myself getting too invested in this though. I haven't played it since I've been back and I doubt I will more than once or twice. I'm just not in a situation where I'm walking around highly populated areas often enough to make it work. When I am I don't typically have my phone out and a game on my screen.

You should take it to Downtown Detroit and then you could make a video series called "Pokemon meets Fallout"

Yeah It's not like anything could go wrong if I randomly walked around Downtown Detroit staring at an iPhone and going whichever direction the Pokemon are. The area around the GM headquarters, sports stadiums, and casinos would be fine but you definitely don't want to stray to far from that area, especially when you aren't paying attention to your environment.

I wonder if any are hanging around the old Pontiac Silverdome.

Is that still up? I heard it was destined for demolition in the Spring but haven't' heard anything specific

I'm actually not sure. I know it was basically just being used for concerts but everyone I know who attended one there said it was a pretty bad experience with terrible acoustics. With the amount of venues we have in Detroit it doesn't really make sense to use the Silverdome anymore. In addition to the 4 sports stadiums there are also big theaters and concert halls that are much better suited for concerts and comedy shows.

Closest I've come to Pokemon Go is almost hitting three people playing it in my bank's parking lot ... at least I assume they were playing it. Why else would three 20-somethings be wandering around a parking lot, each staring at a smart phone screen and not paying attention to cars backing out of a parking space?

Yeah I noticed people walking all over my town with their phones out today. It seems like every church and even a local cemetery are hot spots because there were groups of kids with their phones out at all of them.

I write a weekly blog for one of the world's largest urban cultural parks. And I don't even need to visit the park this week to know a lot of people there are playing (based on social media posts I'm seeing), which gives me an excellent idea for this week's blog: "Come for the Pokemon, Stay for the Culture."

I like the idea/concept of the game but they need some major freaking updates.

I grew up with the original Pokemon so while I appreciate them using the originals in this game they've done a lot of things that have really killed it for me.
You can't trade anything, I hear there will be an update for this... let's hope so.
You can't battle your friends, game is pretty sad without this.

The biggest thing that bothers me with it is the fact that you cant actually battle wild Pokemon, you have to feed them "razz berries" to make them easier to catch? What kind of crap is that?

It doesn't matter which Pokemon game you played or which tv series you may have seen they are all the same in the fact that you battle Pokemon in the wild in order to catch them. You could battle friends and randoms you meet on the street. There is so much that you should be able to do but cannot.

What does the game currently boil down to? Walking around waiting for the server to spawn random things at you. Mind you the servers don't even do this well. Ghost Pokemon coming out in during the day, finding water Pokemon in the middle of a city where there is no water to be found.

It sounds to me the guys who made ingress literally took their game engine, got a license from Nintendo to whore out their characters and then slapped this new interface over top of their old game.
I've heard the online ingress map actually shows the same locations you would look for in the new Pokemon Go game, which shows they are indeed using the same back-end engine to run this thing.

EDIT

I've only bothered looking at the game for about a day to figure this stuff out. I mean when the streets are littered with people not paying attention to anything around you've gotta wonder what all the hype is about right?

That's all it is, hype. The game isn't even remotely half of what the hordes of people running around make it seem to be.
