Pokemon Go

I messed with it again while I was traveling over the weekend since I was doing a lot of walking. I had an alright time just catching new Pokemon and evolving a few of them but I have no interest in the social aspects.

I walked past a gym and checked it out. First all the Pokemon left behind to defend gyms are leveled about 10 times higher than my strongest pokemon. Second the battle system seems terrible. As far as I can tell, you just tap the screen a lot until you either win or your pokemon faints. I was able to beat the first opponent a couple times even though they had a big level advantage over me but it took almost my entire health bar to do so. Since this doesn't regenerate and you have to beat several more after this you are going to have to have an extremely high leveled pokemon in order to take over a gym.

I don't know how long I will stick with this since I don't like gym system and I'm not going to go out of my way looking for pokestops. I do think the process of finding new pokemon is alright though. I will probably leave the app running when I go for walks at least a little longer. One feature I like is that when you have the battery saving mode active you can just turn your phone upside down and the screen goes off. I do this, put the phone in my pocket, and go about my walk like I would any other day. When a pokemon is in range the phone vibrates to let you know.

I can't help but think that I'm a bit "out of the loop" in that this game has had no direct impact on my life. Meaning, I haven't seen people playing together with the possible exception of what I put in my OP, and I feel NO incentive to fire this game up. Literally the only way I would do it would be if there was some tie-in with Blizzard where each Pokemon you collected equated to getting currency for Overwatch. Actually if that was the case I'd make my wife install the app since she's home with the kids and constantly taking them out and about.

Didn’t know about this stupidy until a few days ago.

On Friday, after work we had a retirement party for someone and more people showed up to the restaurant than originally we had planned, and they didn’t have enough room for us so we went to the place a few doors down. On the way walking there, I saw a group of goofball teenage punks pointing their phones at an upward angle at the village library with glazed looks on their faces. I thought it’s finally happened, these boneheaded millennials finally lost it and are taking pictures of imaginary UFOs or something. I have no filter or shame, so when we walked by I made a smartass comment loud enough for them to hear about gathering in a circle to await the arrival of the mothership and then we’d all be better off. The 60+ year old person who was retiring said ‘they’re probably just playing Pokeman Go’. I was beyond shocked as I haven’t heard the word Pokeman in probably 16 or 17 years when everyone in my age bracket at the time was collecting those stupid trading cards. At first I didn’t even think I was thinking about the right Pokeman, I had no idea that was even still a thing.

At the restaurant everyone was talking about Pokeman, and needless to say they were all shocked when they found out that their early 30s IT guy had no clue what it was and that I really didn't care. They were even more shocked to find out I’m not on Facebook or Twitter and I really have no idea what Snap Chat or Instant Gram are. I refuse to participate in fads, and I refuse to participate in the scam called ‘in app purchases’. Unless it’s to remove advertisements.

I have better things to do in my life than wander around looking for imaginary creatures in augmented reality. If I ‘catch’ all of these things, what’s the prize at the end? What do I get? How much money?...yeah I thought so.

It's a game. Play it or don't. But don't call it a stupidity just because you don't care for it. How often do you ever get a prize for beating any game? In app purchases are not required to play, but thanks for the rant anyway.

Agreed. Live your life and let others do the same. How much money do you get from watching TV every night or any other hobby you might like? That's obviously not the reason people participate in their hobbies of choice. You sound ignorant, and worse you are proud of your ignorance.

Nice try. Watching TV is not a game nor a fad.

I don't care if I sound ignorant, and yes I am damn proud of my stance. Pokeman Go is beyond retarded. Now go livestream yourself playing it while falling into an open manhole or walking into a tree. Gotta catch those imaginary creatures you know.

You've got a lot of anger in you. You need to get back to those "better things to do in your life" and quit spending so much time worried about what other people are doing.

When people stop doing stupid things, I'll quit being worried. If some stupid brain dead millennial wanders into my SUV and puts so much as a scratch on it because they are staring at their phone catching imaginary creatures, I'm not going to be a happy camper. These idiots can fall off as many cliffs as they want, thinning the herd and all you know. Also if the asshats that play this junk, had some common sense and common courtesy it wouldn't be so bad.

I guess it is OK that folks are getting exercise looking for Pokemon but not so OK that they are walking off cliffs and bumping into things. It is only a matter of time before Nintendo gets sued for a wrongful death and they have to cease the game. Too many stupid people around for this kind of concept to work very well without casualties.

Last I checked, this wasn't the PIT, so quit with the name calling and keep it family friendly.

Why not? People call games stupid or bad, all the time. It's called an opinion. Why does it bother you what people think about a game?

I think the game is at most silly (too repetitive and lacking the things that made the originals fun, ie battling people and strays), and think most people are going over board on it as well.
My kids love it, but they spend maybe 15 mins. on it a day. And the "walking" they want to do with it is usually begging me to drive them to pokespots a couple miles away.

Name calling isn't allowed there either. And he wasn't calling anyone here a name.
Name calling happens there all the time. I never suggested he was calling anyone here a name, I was objecting his use of a$$hats in what is a public portion of this website.

Then object to the language. Your post itself said "name calling".

fyi, the pit has the same name calling rules as the rest of the site.

He entered into a thread on it and ranted about it and the people that play it. Having an opinion is fine, demeaning people that play the game and calling them names is not.

he mentioned what he saw in person of people playing it.

Not his fault if someone plays it alot and takes the comment personally.

Ah yes the "teenage punks" he saw playing the game who were not causing any trouble yet he felt the need to walk by and insult them. Come on Derwin0 , he clearly came into the Pokemon Go thread specifically to troll people who were playing it. What he did was no different than a Dish fanboy going into the Directv section and calling everyone there a "retarded asshat" for choosing Directv.

I wouldn't defend Pokemon Go as a game. If someone wanted to come in here and say they didn't think it was a good video game I would agree with them. What I take issue with is coming in here and belittling people because they have a different hobby than you. So what if people like to play Pokemon Go? Whether it's video games, movies, comics or any other type of hobby it happens way to often from people who don't understand it, while at the same time acting like their hobby of watching TV is some noble pursuit.

I'll say it again, live and let live. Have a great time doing what you like and let others do the same. There is no reason to dump on someone because they have different tastes than you.
