I can't seem to remember, but for those of you that have painted a Primestar dish, what type of paint did you use? My extra Primestar dish needs some paint, thought it would be a good one to pratice one. Thanks in advance!

I grabbed semi-gloss that matched the brick wall behind it in an effort to appease the woman.

A year later it has oxidized but I'm not too worried about it. It still blends as good as I could hope for. I think so long as the paint isn't metallic you're ok. Most say to steer clear of a glossy paint as well. If it snows there you might consider a dark color to help the snow melt off it.

The one I used for my Primestar is a dead ringer for the original color(although my avatar pic doesnt do it justice because of direct sunlight), Krylon Battleship Gray. I found mine online.

I live out "in the sticks" (wooded lot) and my dishes (Primestar, too) all mounted to poles on the edge of my property. I painted then camoflage,as to distract the hunters. Looks cool ,too!:eureka :neener

show me :)

WillardG -

Sounds great.
Ya know, a picture is worth a thousand words...
So, speak up!

Also, which paint brand/type did you choose?

I used 96 cents a can Wal Mart spray bomb flat black on my last P* paint job....looks good to me. I have used the Krylon Fusion plastic paint too. In other words use whatever you've got. :D

I have my eye on another primestar (which will make 3 primestars and one fortec dish in the yard in addition to the BUD (maybe another stationary BUD soon too), although only I've only planted 2 of the small dishes so far). I'm thinking if I get up to 6 small dishes in the same basic area, I'm gonna paint the posts green and the dishes pastel colors so that my wife will think they look like a half-dozen big flowers from the rear window of the house (cheesy, I know, but gotta figure out some way to keep her from complaining once I get "too many" dishes out there!)

Hey guys:

This may sound strange, but I've found that latex house paint works really good on fiberglass and plastic dishes. It has the ability to expand and contract at the same rate as either the glass or the plastic, which reduces peeling.

Just be sure that the surface is clean and lightly sanded. It'll last for years and mildew and mold won't be a problem if you add the inhibitor or use paint that has it in it.

Use either flat or simigloss.

I see you use non-pen mounts just like mine. They're great!

Hey Tron,

I got six of those and the two new in the box 84Es back when I found the former Primestar dealer last fall. I think I had to give him $5.00 each for them.

They work great for the Primestar dishes.

Hey Harold,

I have read on this forum where it isn't a good idea to sand on the Primestar dishes, because the rough surface that you feel is actually the mesh of the dish which is just below. Sanding can actually take some of the mesh off.

Just what I read on here before.

You're right Fred. I should have specified 600 grit wet-or-dry sanded with water, and only lightly on the jellcoat. Very, very carefully. Even a Scotchbrite is good for scuffing up the surface. Cleaning and scuffing is important to make any paint stick whether its enamel or latex.
