Orion Cooker

Bought my Orion yesterday at Home Depot for $99. Was a leftover from last year but brand new in the box. Am looking forward to the first experience, but need for the weather to get a little warmer. Will continue to monitor this site, as I have been doing for a few months now.

I was going to try a cook yesterday and was called to go out and help get my Aunt and Uncle a TV going...(1 year old plasma died Thursday night)... put the roast in a Crockpot for an overnight cook and power was out for about 5 hours... the dogs are going to eat good in a little bit ;)
 
The Plan:2 approximatly 3.5 lb. Chickens

Rub:
2 Tsp. garlic powder
2 Tsp. onion powder
2 Tsp. Onion Flakes
2 Tsp. ground sage
1 Tsp. ground red pepper
1 Tsp. crushed red pepper
2 Tsp. black pepper
2 Tsp. brown sugar
1 Tsp. cane sugar
2 Tsp. seasoning salt
1 Tsp. sea salt
2 Tsp. Parsley flakes
2 Tsp. Italian seasoning
2 Tsp. Cumin
2 Tsp. Oregeno
1 Tsp. Lemon & Pepper
1 Tsp. Lime Salt

Sauce: a Mix of Kraft's Spicy HoneyBBQ Sauce, White Zinfandel Wine, Apple Juice, Apple Cider Vinegar & Great Value Spicy Brown Mustard

Hickory Chips
8 oz. of 70% Apple Juice / 30% Apple Cider Vinegar in drip pan

Mix of Kingsford Mesquite Briquettes and Royal Oak Charcoal

Rub applied this morning, Sauce about 1 hour before cook...
Ignition 4:55 pm
 
Normally I would pull at (or before) this temp, but going to give 10-15 more minutes as probe didn't feel "right"...

Applied Rub about 24 hours ago...

Add Salmon Fillets to top rack and sprinkle rub on...

Marinate: 1/4 cup Apple Cider Vinegar, 1/3 cup Apple Juice & 1 Budweiser.

Applied Marinate about 3 hours ago... poured into drip pan...

Chips used Apple

Ignition Time 5:35

Pulled at 7:10 pm

I wish I lived closer to you. I just showed the above recipe to my wife, and she said "Yum, he's got all the good stuff in that".
 
That looks good...how long did you cook it? It's been windy one day and not the next so kinda hard to plan a cook here...


It was 13-14 lbs. I have noticed Brined turkeys take less time to cook, so I alternate between 6-7 min per pound.

7 lbs x 7 min =49 min
7lbs x 6 min =42 min.

An hour 31 min

The day I cooked the turkey it was miserable out. I thought I would have to cook it in the oven, because the rain. Just as the oven preheated there was a break in the rain and I ran outside and fired it up...

As far as wind I use a couple of fold out tables on their side as wind breaks. But I have seen some real clever ideas at the orion site, especially the cookout thread.
