I am looking at getting Satellite for 1 channel. Anything extra is gravy. My wife is from Somalia, and sometime this month STN is supposed to be launched, and carried by Globecast. I contacted Globecast and they said I have to use their equiptment in order to pay for their service, but it's one channel. I've seen the names Fortec, Dreambox, Panset, but Globecast only uses their own receiver. If I could get the signal elsewhere without paying would do it, but haven't found it. When I ask Globecast can I purchase a card from them and pay a monthly subscription to view this channel they say nope.. got to buy the whole kit. Any suggestions?

Hello and welcome to the SatelliteGuys FTA forum, I would suggest you buy the complete system from Globecast or one of their dealers. Its the ONLY legal way to get this channel in this country.

And we have a STRICT no hack talk policy here :)

like I said not trying to hack, or do something illegal. When I had called up one of the satellite sales companies i.e. sandoun, satteliterus.... they said that STN was going to be an FTA. If it's going to be an FTA I would rather get a different receiver, setup. STN is supposed to be launched this month, is there a way of purchasing a generic card, and paying for the service to Globecast, or another provider. My biggest issue is I don't like proprietary hardware. Don't think anyone one in here would like their only choice of gas for their ford to be produced by ford only...

Gotcha! It was FTA, they have talking about making it a pay service now for over a year. Hope not. Good luck with it!

where would I find it as an FTA out of the Seattle area? If I can get it for free I obviously don't want to pay. And if I can have a choice in recievers I don't want to be stuck on a proprietary. I have not found it in the FTA lists... Any help?

If it's going to be FTA it'll show up here when it does:

http://www.lyngsat.com/ia5.html

According to :

http://www.globecastwtv.com/ch_stn.htm

It's on:
D/L Frequency: 12,122 MHz

D/L Polarity: Horizontal

Symbol Rate: 22.000 Msym

FEC: 3/4

This correlates to a GC transponder on IA-5. I scanned it and didn't see STN show up.. at least not that I recognized. They say there is a preview on channel 302 of the GC system... maybe it's not up in it's own slot yet. I did see a couple color bars channels on there.

STN's website:
http://www.stnworldmedia.com/

Looks like you can watch it via the web for now.

I wouldn't dive into a bunch of equipment quite yet if that channel is the #1 priority.

On the plus side, assuming it does go FTA... the recievers are only getting cheaper :).

Wouldn't you know it, Ch 302 is scrambled.

I re-scanned and as of right now I don't see STN at all (scrambed or otherwise)

Whatever you get would need to be compatible with GlobeCast's smart card. That capability isn't common in FTA receivers you find around here, and GC's full-system equipment price ($179 + tax/ship) is competitive with any FTA system. The good news is that you should also be able to pick up FTA from IA 5 using that equipment. "You can receive all FTA channels with your WorldTV receiver package by entering technical details into the decoder menu." --GC's FAQ.

The STN site ( http://www.stnworldmedia.com/subscribe.htm ) already offers subscription pricing for a few cable systems and GlobeCast. I can't see any way around it if you've gotta have that channel.

Lyngsat5l indicates it's free... can someone check please. If it is free... Don't want to be locked down...then I can shop, if it's locked then... well then I'm stuck with a globecast receiver... at least for the first tv .

I just checked. It's there, it's in the clear, and it's broadcasting... a blank black screen.

I'll check during the day to see it it has anything on :). It's definately broadcasting something though and I'm getting pretty solid signal quality (73%) with the baby Primestar.

If it was there and not broadcasting I'd get 'No audio / video' and if it was scrambled it's say 'scramble channel'. I get neither. No sound, blackscreen, and that's it.

Hey it's much better than the last time I looked :).

Ditto to Shawn. I just checked it last night, and it was a black screen.

If you want to believe GlobeCast and STN both announced the subscription plan, but that it'll be available for free anyway (for more than a short test period), go right ahead. It's always possible that'll happen, but I wouldn't bet on it.

if you were a bettin' man... what kind of period would you guess... My thinking is this buy a full fledge FTA setup and then just pickup a Globecast FTA when if it goes PPV, of course if my receiver never tells me it's encrypted I would never know right?

Do you know for sure that it IS broadcasting on GC right now? they might still be setting it up.

As for bets.... with FTA, all bets are off.

If it's any consolation... on that same sat a Filipeno radio station we used to listen to (DZAR) is now broadcasting dead air..... maybe GC is just changing things around.

according to STN it was supposed to be as 05/25/05 broadcasting...so don't know. I know nothing is guarenteed especially when it's free...

I'll check in on it periodically. I'll let you know if I see anything pop in.

STN has been on/off FTA for sometime now. If your wife wants to watch the channel on a regular basis, you should subscribe with GlobecastTV.

Yes, they have a policy about using their equipment. Usually that is because they only want to provide tech support to one receiver they know and not 100 other receivers they don't know.

The receiver they provide is a very basic receiver with a card slot. It comes preprogrammed with a few transponders (only the Globecast ones). It will allow you to watch the other FTA channels on IA5 if you enter the other transponders manually.

For a fixed stationary system, their system will work fine. If you decide in the future to add a motor to the mix, their receiver does not support USALS or DiSEqc 1.2 (at least the last time I checked).

We have a system (S-2 here ) that is comaptible with their system, but with more features (i.e. USALS, etc). The receiver has it own ID and coupled with an authorized smartcard you will be able to subscribe. But, again, they will only activate their brand receivers and can't guarantee ours will work.

Hello, I am from somalia too, and i use to watch the channel once in a while, and like i belive sadoun said, it use to be free some times, and some times it was money i guess, as of right now, i don't know if its free or not, and its not a 24 hour channel either, the last time i checked which was a while ago, my dish is not hooked right now, so i don't know what the situation is right now, so good luck bro

Sadoun has a link where I could get the Fortec Ultra and a T90 for 329.00 If I order just a receiver at about 120 from Globecast could I independently control two tv's, and use the access card on the Fortec, and use the Globecast as the 2nd tv? The only reason to get the globecast is if STN is encrypted. I don't think it would be wrong if I am a subscriber with a card and my other receiver happens to decode it even though there isn't a card in it. what do you think? If the two Receiver set up would work, what additional hardware other then coax would I need. The T90 looks stout enough, for north America If I wanted that to be the end all be all how many additional lnb's would I want? that set up comes with 3.
