old 3900 and program guide

a friend of mine has a old 3900 (running off a Dish 500) in his shop and every time you go to the guide the preview window comes up and it says searching for guide info. but it never goes to "downloading guide".

Even after doing a check switch it didn't download the guide. I tried holding the power button(s) in to do a soft boot but that didn't reboot it.

Any suggestions (other than replacing it with a newer receiver) ?

Pulling the power cord will cause a reboot. 3900 has so little memory that it barely stores any future information. Replacement is really the best option, I would suggest looking for a 501 or 508.

Yup, the signal strengths are good (100+).
The receiver he has in the house (501? or 510?) doesn't have the guide problem that the 3900 does.

The 3900 was never much for downloading guide info even when it was new.
