OFFICIAL External Storage Information

A few people who got L4.41 and hooked up drives (including Smith, P) have been prompted to format their drives. Afterwards. they get the prompt to call and active the External support if they try to access the USB 2.0.

Yep. I got the prompt to reformat when I connected the WD 500 GB "My Book". I had used it previously with my PC and had deleted the contents after burning them to DVD. I figure it can just be hooked back up to my PC if it doesn't end up working with the 622 but I hope that's not the case.

So my question is, when the HDD support officially roles out, is going to reformat my HDD?

If you want to use your HDD to store programs you have recorded, it will have to be re-formatted. The files system Dish is using for this is Linux Native because the operating system of the 622 is Linux.

I got my answer on my WD 1 Tb drive. It is actuially 2 500G drives in one case and they said it would likely not work. no problem!@ It goes back to work in my business and I'll just buy the lowest cost per G drive for now. Likely a 500G drive.

But the real disappointment is I have to go out of town for the remainder of the week so I won't be able to test anything until I get back Sunday. :(

Also, Scott, they mentioned a special 800 number to call and register this HDD. I'm sure you will be posting that tomorrow. (Just a reminder)

Folks I think we are freaking out for NO good reason; has anyone actually seen the prompt to reformat on any drive?

I am confident that after you activate it, THEN it will ask you to reformat.

Not losing any sleep over this one. :)

I hooked up an external 320gb drive I had used on my PC and it asked to format it. I let it do its thing and a few minutes later it said the drive had been formatted and to call Dish to activate.

That is a very good idea and should make activating easier. I wonder if the call to activate number that you get on the receiver would be changed to the proper number. It sure would seem silly if it isn't but stranger things have happened in the land of E*.

When you connect it to your PC, does it appear as (1) or (2) drives ?? I would think that the enclosure's controller card would make it transparent to the OS as to how many physical drives are inside.

Doesn't everyone who has L4.41 know the number from either the screensaver or the prompt they get when connecting an external drive ?

I asked the question not to freak out, but to determine if I would need to back-up the MyBook before I plugged it into the 622. I'm not going to use the mybook as a permanent drive attached to the 622. I just need it for a short time to transfer all my stuff from a dying 622 to a new one. if it reformats, so be it. But I need to save the files that are on the mybook before I do. After I transfer the stuff, I'll re-re-format the mybook back to windows for use on my pc.

what I'm seeing (by reading all the posts) is that it's the upgrade to L4.41 that prompts the format, not the activation. That makes a lot of sense for people who don't yet have it not being asked to format the drive when they plug it in.

So here's another question, when (time) does the software normally roll out? Overnight? The deal is, I have a brand new 622 sitting ready to go but I've been waiting for Wed to pull my stuff off it. Obviously the new 622 doesn't have the new software. So will I have to wait until Thurs to put the files on the new one (overnight for upgrade) or will the upgrade happen when I first plug the new 622 in and it initializes for the first time?

When you go to multi media and hit usb storage the number come upto activate it at 1- 888-241-2205.

It should pull the latest software update available if you first install a new 622. But be warned that currently L4.05 and L 44.1 are both valid software right now for the 622.

As Hall said. It probably depends on the controller. If the controller is making it look like 1 drive then I'd hold out hope that it'll work. Go to the "Disk Management" screen. Look for 1 drive of of TB (not partitions).

Request to Format: Stop worrying. It doesn't surprise me in the least that it doesn't prompt to format a fat32 formatted disk. This format is CURRENTLY supported for transfer of pictures from a mass storage compliant device.

If you reformat it as NTFS you'll probably get the request to format. Many external hdds come preformatted as fat32 since it more universally compatible (win95, linx, pocketdish, linkplayer, etc). I reformt to NTFS is the drive is strictly for PC use.

I'd expect the request to reformat the fat32 disk once you actually try to move content to it.

Everyone should have L441 by tommorow. :) (At least that is what I was just told)

Unfortunately the person I spoke with did not have any idea if my external drive will work with my 622.

I am almost thinking of plugging it into my PC and formatting it for use ont he PC then plugging it again into the 622 (and hopefully it formats it) I didn't do anything with it so far except take it out of the box and plug it in to the 622, where it recognized the drive but it did not format it.

I wouldn't think you have anything to lose doing that. It shouldn't use up one of your activations since it isn't activated yet.

The first time I plugged my new Seagate drive in, the 622 only asked if I wanted to manage it. When I got home from work last night and powered the HT up, I got the manage question. When I answered yes, I got the format prompt. Yay!!!!! The 622 formatted the HDD and rebooted the receiver. Why it did that I have no idea, but everything is working fine now, just waiting for the 15th:hungry:

Me too, when I hooked up the FreeAgent the first time I only got the, "Do you want to manage it?" pop up. After seeing ripnbigc's post above, I disconnected the drive and reconnected it. Then another pop up came up and asked me if I wanted to format the drive. The format only took five minutes or so for the 750 GB drive. When it was finished, it rebooted my 622.

Scott -- Just leave the drive alone until tomorrow. And it would not need to be reformatted to work with you pc anyway; it will work out of the box.

Patience grasshopper. ;)
