Not happy with the Dish Hopper DVR

Let's see, I'm a kid, and I see on the tuners list "private" or "unavailable" or some such- everyone not dumber than a stump will have a pretty good idea what dad is watching.

...Or it could just be programmed not to show up at all on certain receivers. Shouldn't be that hard to mark recordings as owned by a certain receiver and/or private or not.

I'm actually surprised at people who claim it shouldn't have privacy features. I'm not even talking about porn here (again, that's what the Internet is for.) I'm just talking about being able to have separate recording lists for each receiver, OR shared lists. That way kids can't delete other people's stuff. They should also make it to where you can ration tuners and HDD space between receivers. That way one receiver isn't "hogging" all three tuners and/or all the HDD space while the 2 other TVs can't even watch TV or record.

Those claiming that it's not necessary because "that's not what the Hopper/Joey is for," well, it's not just all about accessing recordings from any receiver in the house. It's also about saving $$$ because you can just throw 1 DVR and some Joeys in a house, for cheaper than a bunch of DVRs for every room. That's assuming that DISH will have reasonable receiver fees.

There's nothing wrong with options. It shouldn't be about "that's not what it's for." It should be more about, "you can either do it this way or that way."

Either way, it's killing me, the lack of details about Hopper/Joey, specifically about fees, but also about features that may or may not be there. I want to see if Hopper/Joey will be worth it (for me,) and whether or not to just stick with ViP receivers.

has anyone considered the other part to this setup????

if Hopper dies, the customer is left without TV until it is replaced....................................

yeah its been mentioned a couple times

Lol, getting hard to keep up with all these threads... thanks

This is one of the major reasons why I think Dish is wrong, if as reported, to not allow subs to mix Hopper and ViP systems on the same account.

that would be insane if you could not! the idea of independent receivers and Sneaker-Net w/ the EHDs for MRV keeps looking better and better...

they need to make 211 and 722 EHDs interchangeable.

There are posts on this. It won't happen for tech reasons. They really aren't the same animal; they do two different things. I don't recall details.

Considering that the majority of customers most likely only has one receiver, if it dies guess what.

yup, no service until its replaced so really not that much difference.

Exactly. Most people just have one dual tuner receiver. When it goes out then you are out of luck. Just go to a retailer and have them swap it out with a new one right away. If you call Dish you'll have to wait up to 4 business days to get it in the mail.

Are retailers required to do the swap? I've never considered doing this since my last upgrade was through Dish instead of the local retailer? Do retailers charge for this?

So that I get this straight, now most people have only one receiver, with at most three tuners if they have an OTA. BUT having a hopper box with at least three tuners, four with the OTA tuner, and an added ability to record all four networks and still have two or three tuners available isn't enough for most people.

Would the OTA on the 722k still work if the 722k bites the dust?

Ghpr13:confused:

I'm sure the module itself still works but I doubt it will work in the defective receiver. Depends what the problem with the receiver is. If the receiver won't power on or output a video signal then you won't be able to access the OTA.

Retailers are not really required to do any service unless they are DHPP retailers. We as a family business that also sells appliances and TVs rely on offering great service. We do charge a fee for getting a receiver swapped out right away. We charge the appropriate tech visit fee of $95 or $15. We also charge $20 for shipping the receiver and another $20 for processing paperwork. I know it sounds like a lot but when a customer needs TV instantly for something it's worth it.

That may be true but if a customer wants a replacement receiver sent to them for free they will have to wait up to 4 business days.

A lot of people will have a dual tuner receiver hooked up to 3 TVs. So they would be out 3 TVs aslo. The arguement only works for those who have more than one receiver.

If you mean will OTA work if the sat tuners die, then yes it would work for a certain period of time until the receiver deactivates itself after not having sat reception for too long.
