Noob Here And I got some Questions about Local Channels

Hi guys I'm new here. A friend told me about this site and said i should sign up. Anyways I'm a total noob for when i comes to satellite programming and I got some questions...


Ok I'm moving to a new house in Midland Georgia in the Muscogee county side. Its right next to Columbus GA. My new area code is 31820.

When I check for available local channels on directtv.com with my area code it states that i cannot receive any.

I talked with a CSR and he stated that I would have to get a signed waiver from all the local stations in the area in order to receive locals from bigger cities like Atlanta. I talked with a couple station engineers, one from fox and the other from ABC and they both said i live to close and that i would never get a signed waiver. This really bums me out.

Is there anyway I can get HD Locals? Do i have to use an seperate Antenna?

I dont think I could go without my Lost and the ATL. Falcons especially in HD.

I have 2 HDTV's one is a samsung 50 in DLP and its not HD ready but i did just get an Olevia LT37HVS and it states thats it has HD built in and is HD ready.

So could i use an OTA Antenna to pick up my locals on just the one Tv? Is so does direct tv make an Antenna that will connect to the satellite?

Like I said before I'm a strait noob to the satellite industry and should could use all the help I can get.

1. Without even looking at your affiliates claimed predictive reception, at 8m - 21m from your transmission towers WOULD nearly guarantee that you will NOT get waivers from any affiliate unless they happen to be owned by the network. They NAB and affiliates fought hard, and continue to fight to keep a stranglehold on the user.

2. Yes, you will need a quality antenna, aimed correctly to receive your locals, analog and digital. Such as maybe a Channel Master CM4228 for digital alone. If you want both analog and digital, then you will need a combo VHF/UHF antenna. Mount it as high as possible outside; above or at the roof line. I would not really recommend what DirecTV or others might provide or anything that clips onto the dish itself or anything that looks gimmicky or proclaims to be specially for HD as there is no such thing..

3. You can feed as many or as few TV as you have a need for.

Yes, but since they can't do anything but SD over analog, I figured that would make more sense to th OP; but digital doesn't mean HD.

Yes, OTA, but, SD and HD are resolutions, analog and digital are the carriers, apples and oranges (which is why saying 'SD or digital' is like saying 'Red or Tiny'), you can broadcast HD or SD over either, HD does NOT mean digital, SD does not mean analog, it is only digital on D* because it is the nature of the system to use digital, but one can have HD over analog, just as one can have SD over digital, and vice versa.
