Noob External Storage Question

New to DISH and considering adding an external drive for more storage capacity. But I'm wondering if for some reason in the future I cancel DISH, will I be able to access the content stored on the external drive? Say, if I cancel DISH but still keep my 722 receiver, will that let me watch recorded material from the external drive? Or how about without the 722 receiver?

You'll only be able to view EHD content through ViP (DISH Network) boxes on your account.

• If you replace/upgrade your receiver, it can be activated to work with the EHD and, of course access the recordings on it.
• You can move the EHD around your home and connect it to multiple ViP receivers with seemless operation. You can even move recordings from one receiver to another using the EHD. The only requirement is that all involved receivers must be registered to the same account. This means that you CANNOT take the EHD to a friend's house and expect it to work in their ViP receiver.
• Even if you own the ViP receiver, but cancel your DISH Network account, you won't be able to access the EHD with that receiver. The receiver must be activated.

I asked this question a while back in another thread but I never made a decision and I know technology and prices change rapidly. So which EHD would someone recommend that's fairly inexpensive. I don't need a great deal of storage space.

Also, can the EHD be shared with other devices? Meaning if the storage space is large enough, can it be used to back up my computer, or store pictures and music as well?

No. The EHD will be formatted Linux.
