Nintendo Shatters Console Records

Went 180 miles to a much larger city and looked Monday and Tuesday for a Wii... stopped at my local Wal Mart yesterday before coming home and bought the last of 6 they had gotten in (and they went quickly) I have played the bowling game, but bought this for my God Daughter...

Betya you cant play just one---The WII is additive

Another reason I see the Wii being the top seller is due to playability and also for the age demographic. When my daughter gets older I will introduce her to the Wii. I don't think I'll want her playing my PS3....

The Wii is for people that have no interest in gaming- add a Wii Fit and the world of gaming is conquered.:D

If you look at the NPD numbers ( a service that monitors hardware and software sales), the Wii keeps clobbering the 360 and PS3 in hardware sales BUT the 360 keeps winning the software sales crown month after month. It looks like Wii owners buy the console and buy few games, while the 360 fans keep buying new titles..... Last month, the number one Wii game (which came in 4th overall) was WiiPlay, which usually wins because it comes with a controller. The first party titles usually get into the top 10 (Mario, Zelda, etc.) but you never see a Madden or Call of Duty game on the top 10 list...

My point..... Wiis are selling a lot of consoles to casual gamers, but they aren't buying a lot of titles... I hope Nintendo is making money on the consoles (PS3 and 360 hardly make anything on the consoles themselves) because the games sales are weak given the installed base out there.....

If you include the WiiFit and the MarioWheel, as many of the tracking services do, Wii is still winning, especially considering the huge manufacturer profit on the hardware. There are also Games coming on line to attract the Wii crowd (excercise programs and games to take advantage of the wide variety of Wii peripherals). This is a completely different breed of cat. Aside from tradional Sports Games, I don't see a huge cry by the Wii base for more traditional games.:D

Hey, they are doing amazingly well, and the WiiFit is included in the sales data... they are usually around 5-6th in the rankings...

My point is that the games themselves are where they make the big bucks and the Wii is selling twice as many boxes as everyone else, yet seems to be selling half as many games...

Something like 70% of all Wii (edit: wtf, why did I type Wee) software sales are first-party, which is bad. Sure, it's good that software is selling, but it's clear that non-Nintendo franchises are not doing well on the console thanks to the type of buyer the Wii attracts and the amount of shovleware on the system. Nintendo should be making a ton more on 3rd party licensing but they aren't.

Here's an article about attach rates and 3rd party attach rates - Gamasutra - Despite Software Victory, Xbox 360 Attach Rate Remains Unchanged (the report it links to could probably use a thread itself for discussion)
