I wonder if Sony's going to finally feel compelled to make some deep price cuts, between this and the rash of affordable top brand standalone BD players on the market. Like most companies these days they're already cutting payroll: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/12/10/technology/companies/10sony.html?_r=1&partner=rss&emc=rss
I've talked to plenty of people would say they would buy one "if they would just lower the price already"....
If they had dropped the base model to $299 (from $399), there's a good chance I would've bought a second one for my bedroom rather that the Panny BD35 I just got.

That's the price I jumped in at recently. Walmart was giving away $100 giftcard with PS3 Purchase @$399.
I miss that thank you button for posts like these...Sony needs to realize the state of the economy/competition/and other bluray players.. I fear 360 and wii are going to be the big sellers again this year and PS3 will continue the slide.
People are going to now be more fragile about the price than they have before with the way the economy is.
Whoever at Sony decided that the PS3 should not have PS2 compatibility should have been fired, killed, then had all his/her records of even existing removed from the history books and public consciousness. Maybe it wasn't even a real person who decided this.I predict the PS2 outsells the PS3 this holiday season.
While I'm sure price has a lot to do with it I also think it's a combination of the target audience and the method of gameplay.
My brother, who doesn't play any games since NES, purchased a wii for himself and his kids to play the Wii Sports and WiiFit.
Same story for my mother... her christmas wishlist consisted of a WiiFit to play on my nephew's Wii.
People who normally wouldn't play a traditional game are playing it because of the party-mode gaming and family-friendly gaming.
An additional factor for Wii popularity that may not be well known to those that don't have one or don't have it connected online is that you can download many games from previous Nintendo consoles for very reasonable prices.
However, with the Wii, you can cajole even the most awkward or inexperienced member of the family to give it a try. Usually they will want to "try" more than once.
