NHL 2012 off-season notes & transactions

I'm reading tweets that Nash was traded to the Rangers.

He has been traded to the Rangers. Here is the email that I received from the Blue Jackets.

The Columbus Blue Jackets have acquired forwards Brandon Dubinsky and Artem Anisimov, defenseman Tim Erixon and a first round pick in the 2013 NHL Draft in exchange for forward Rick Nash, defenseman Steven Delisle and a conditional third round pick in the 2013 NHL Draft, club Executive Vice President and General Manager Scott Howson announced today. The conditional pick will be returned to the Blue Jackets if the Rangers make the 2013 Stanley Cup Final. The trade is pending all players passing a physical.

Right off hand I don't like the trade but I have a little bit research to do before I comment much more.

Now on the positive side of the Nash trade....

Columbus now has 3 first round picks in a draft that is supposed to have some depth. Hopefully they can use some of those to pickup a couple more players and improve the team this year.

Predators matched the 14-year, $110 million offer between the Flyers and defenseman Shea Weber. This would have been the death blow for the Predators this year if they would have lost Weber also.

So, is this kind of contract guaranteed ?

I think it is. From what I have seen the first 4 years he will make 1M salary + 13M signing bonus per year. Years 5-6 4M salary + 8M signing bonus per year; years 7-10 6M salarary; year 11 3M salary; last 3 years 1M salary.

They are saying that it is a way to circumvent the current salary cap. Now I have to wonder if the NHL will sign off on the contract.

I think your right, much like when Carolina made an offer to Sergi Federov for 27M or something like that, just to see if Mr. I would pay to keep him.

He did and the price of beer went up GREATLY.

Talk about a poor way of keeping NHL contracts in line.

Do they want to kill the sport? If they have another one then I am done with Hockey. Period.

A lockout would not surprise me but I think it would only be for a short period of time this time around. I don't see another full season being lost due to it.

Less than 1 week away from finding out if there will be a lockout in the NHL. Lets hope that both sides get their heads out of their rear ends and start getting down to business.

i agree but looks like a long strike ahead but let's hope the get this resolved fast :)

You mean they could have resloved all this in a week earlier if they wanted ?

With no meetings between the owners and players scheduled we are all set for a lockout in just over 5 1/2 hours.

It is funny that both the players and owners say they want to get thing resolved but they have yet to meet over the past couple of days. Wouldn't you think there would be around the clock meetings if they really wanted to get things worked out. :(

It's official (I hate to say it) the NHL Lockout has begun!

Strike one: The NFL Lockout. Strike two: The NBA Lockout. And now Strike three: The NHL Lockout has begun. Three strikes and you're out. That's is a sad day for hockey fans for both countries. I predict it will hurt the economy. I hope it don't last 232 days like the MLB strike of 1994-95 where we had no World Series. We had enough lockouts, period. It needs to be "Hockey was a union sport instead of is a union sport".

I guess as I get older these things stopp bugging me, when ever they come back they come back. I have that feeling with all the sports leagues

Hockey is pretty irrelevant in most of the States, we went chugging along the year there was no season, and will do so again.
