NHL 2011-12 Season

if you keep Columbus in the west then the 5 team division is Chicago, Minnesota, Columbus, Nashville, St Louis. All pretty close to each other
Yes Detroit is in a weird division but the rest of the divisions are pretty well close to each other.

The issue for Columbus and Detroit being in the Western conference is not so much their division games, it's all the Western conference non-division games that are in the Mountain and Pacific time zones that start at 9:30-10:30PM eastern time. That's what they're tyring to get away from.

who would you pick NOW...not 3+ years from now to move? Nobody else makes sense

Who would I pick NOW to relocate west? You cannot PICK a team to relocate. I'm talking about PHYSICALLY moving west, like Hotlanta did to Winnipeg.

I mentioned the Circus Clowns because IF they moved to Kansas City, as has been rumored, it would solve the problem...Kansas City and Winnipeg goes to the Western conference, Columbus AND Detroit come east, and everybody wins.

But the Mausoleum contract does not run out until 2015.

Meh. I think it would be a mistake for the NHL to relocate a team to Kansas City. KC had a franchise (the Scouts) back in the 70's and it failed miserably before moving to Colorado (and then New Jersey). Yes, the NHL successfully put teams back in Minnesota and Winnipeg (hopefully successful) , but it was a mistake for the North Stars and original Jets to move in the first place. IMO, Kansas City would be more like the Atlanta debacle than Minnesota.

I don't care where they go...as long as they go.

Reading reports that the realignment could be decided tonight. I am getting ready to be disappointed.

For all of the Detroit fans it does not look like they are heading east. New devision for Detroit looks to be CBJ, CHI, DAL, DET, MIN, NASH, STL & WPG. Still waiting for the official announcement.

Here is the looks of the vote also all teams will play a home and away series with each other. Overall I think it is a win win for most of the teams.
East
TOR, MTL, OTT, BUF, BOS, FLA, TB in one 7-team conference.
NYR, NYI, NJD, PHI, PIT, WSH, CAR in other 7-team conference.

West
ANA, LAK, SJS, PHX, COL, VAN, CGY, EDM in one 8-team conference.
DAL, STL, CHI, MIN, WPG, NSH, DET, CBJ in other 8-team conference.

It's now official

Governors adopt radical four-conference realignment plan - NHL.com - News

The makeup of the yet-to-be-named four conferences is as follows:

* New Jersey, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, New York Rangers, New York Islanders, Washington and Carolina

* Boston, Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa, Buffalo, Florida and Tampa Bay

* Detroit, Columbus, Nashville, St. Louis, Chicago, Minnesota, Dallas and Winnipeg

* Los Angeles, Anaheim, Phoenix, San Jose, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Colorado

The new alignment also enables the NHL to create a balanced schedule in which all teams will play each other at least twice every season, once at home and once on the road, giving fans a chance to see every team and superstar in the League. The remaining games will be played within the conferences.

The teams in the seven-team conferences will play 36 inter-conference games -- six games against every other team. The teams in the eight-team conferences will play 38 inter-conference games -- at least five games against every other team, but as many as six against three different opponents. The remaining games will be home-and home series against each opponent from the other three conferences.

I agree, good compromise.

At first glance, it looks like Winnipeg and the two Florida teams will be the frequent flyer winners.

There will still be 16 playoff teams under the new format, but with a significant twist. The top four teams from each conference will make the playoffs, but teams will stay within their own conference.

Example:
Hypothetical Conference "B" Final Standings
1. Detroit
2. Chicago
3. Minnesota
4. St. Louis
5. Winnipeg
6. Columbus
7. Nashville

#1 Detroit would play #4 St. Louis and #2 Chicago would play #3 Minnesota in the first round. The winners of those series would meet for the "conference championship" That winner would then play the winner of "Conference A" for the right to advance to the Stanley Cup Finals vs. the winner of "Conference C" vs. "Conference D"

How is that any different than it is now ?
They play all of them already.

They only have to go out west for a total of 8 games during the season. They now only play Eastern and Central time zones for the majority of the games.

less games to the west coast

per a previous post

so the 38 inter-confrence games worst case is one timezone back (most of the teams are in the Central time zone) for Detroit. I'm sure you can stay up for an 8:00 start ;)

Since the rest are home and home its only 8 games to the mountain/pacific time zone a year

So now it's the Top 4 in each division for the playoffs, instead of top 8
