Taking a offensive linemen in the 1st round is a incredibly stupid financial mistake. NO MATTER how AWESOME they looked in college, they will be facing BIGGER and FASTER guys in the NFL and they will bring NOTHING new to the NFL other than their name. Now don't get me wrong, the 2nd most important position on a tema TO ME in the offensive line....but GREAT offensive linemen are developed IN THE NFL! IF they come into the league with a good work ethic and decent size and skill, they will BECOME good linemen barring injury and stupidity.....they do NOT become good linemen IN COLLEGE.
When you take a player in the 1st, say 10 picks....he has to produce IMMEDIATELY!! Either on the defense or on the offense...none of this "needs to develope a little before he starts"....the ONLY exception is a QB.
Huh? There is no greater risk in drafting an O Linemen (Left Tackles specifically) early than any other position player. Every collegiate player will face bigger and faster opponents, not just the tackles.
Protecting the QB's blindside is one of the most important aspects of the game. Football is won and lost in the trenches. A great tackle can have one of the most dramatic overall impacts on an offense. Of all the truly superior Tackles out there, they have one common thing in common. They were all (with moderate exceptions) drafted high in the first round!
Here is a list of the current/most recent top Tackles in the league and their draft position. Of the list, only Matt Light was chosen later than the first round.......
Walter Jones- Rd. 1/ Pick #6
Johnathan Ogden- Rd. 1/ Pick #4
Orlando Pace- Rd. 1/ Pick #1
Willie Anderson- Rd. 1/ Pick #10
John Tait- Round 1/ Pick #14
Chris Samuels- Round 1/ Pick #3
Jamal Brown- Round 1/ Pick #13
Luke Petitgout- Round 1/ Pick #19
Matt Light- Round 2/ Pick #48
Joe Thomas- Round 1/ Pick #3
And, for that matter, the best Tackle of all time.....
Anthony Munoz- Round 1/ Pick #3
I think I see a trend, do you?
