NFL 2008-09 Season

3. Speaking of the Lions, at least they can score touchdowns. Yesterday, the Browns set an NFL record by being the first team to not score a TD in 6 consecutive games! Watching this team try to run an offense led by Ken Dorsey or Bruce Gradkowski was shear torture. If the Lions were to play the Browns next week, Detroit would probably be favored. Thank God this '08 season is finished!

I'm glad the Steelers could help the Clowns with the new record.:D

4. I respect the Steelers willingness to not lay down and play their reserves yesterday, but since they had nothing to gain or lose by the outcome of the game, did they make the right decision in playing Roethlisberger?

Look what happened to Indy the year the Steelers won the Superbowl, the rested for seemed like a month, and they got beat.

5. During the 2nd quarter, Willie Parker fired a football into the crowd after scoring a TD. Will he be fined $10,000? A NY Jets DE got fined for as much last week for doing the same with snow.

Yeah, he'll be fined.

7. One of two exemplary stories of team turnaround has to go to the Miami Dolphins. The Fins improved on a 1-15 record by going 11-5 and winning the AFC East this year. It was only fitting that Chad Pennington got to clinch the division against his former team he was ousted by on the final week of the regular season.

Glad to see Joey back into the playoffs.:D

9. While Tony Romo will still be associated with the stigma of "not being able to win the big game", he isn't alone in the blame to go around for the disappointing Cowboys season. At the beginning of the year, the 'Boys were atop the list of Super Bowl contenders. To not make the playoffs with this collection of talented individuals is completely unacceptable. Yet, right there is where the problem begins and ends. Until the "talented individuals" play as a team and not for themselves, they will continue to disappoint year in and year out.

:up:up:up

People will probably think Dallas was the NFL's biggest disappointment, but I will pick Jacksonville.

At least Dallas finished with a winning records; Jacksonville, OTOH

1. Couldn't beat the Browns or Bengals

2. Finished 5-11

Looking back on my preseason predictions, I made some REALLY dumb predictions when looking at how the season played out:

AFC East

Jets: 8-8- Mr. Attention Hog will make things a bit better, but they'll give up too many points
Jets did better by one game, but my prediction turned out pretty accurate.

Dolphins: 3-13- They have a LOOOOOONG way to go before they can become respectable.
I guess four months is long enough.

AFC South
Colts: 12-4- They are still in mint condition. With Harrison getting older, they'll need to rely on Gonzalez and Dallas Clark a lot more in the passing game.
I got the 12-4 part right, but...

Titans: 8-8- They are stuck in a trapped division, and I don't trust their recieving corps.
I picked the team that finished with football's best record to finish LAST in their division.

AFC North
Browns: 11-5- Say hello to the Midwest version of Air Coryell!
And say hello to the NFL's version of M*A*S*H!

Ravens: 4-12- Over/Under: 20 INT's for Flacco?
I guess I should have said 20 TD's. Wow, did I get this one wrong!

Raiders: 8-8- They have the pieces to break through, and can feast on a soft schedule.
I know they finished nicely, but dear god. I picked the Raiders to go .500?!

AFC Champions: Jaguars
My Super Bowl pick couldn't even beat HD MM's or brainfry's teams. Nothing more needs to be said.

Giants: 9-7- Key losses on defense, Shockey's gone, and they have a HUGE bullseye on their chest. Dallas and many others will be out for blood.
Oops.

Panthers: 8-8- It's make or break for John Fox.
I guess they got the "make" part right.

Falcons: 2-14: Let the rebuilding begin.
Way ahead of schedule!

Lions: 9-7- There is a light at the end of the tunnel.
Dear GOD!

In Paul's Lions preview picked the Lions to WIN their division. Think about that. I had them as a playoff team.

Also, I had them going 11-5. 11-5?!

http://www.satelliteguys.us/sports-section/143851-official-detroit-lions-2008-season-preview-2.html

This may be THE dumbest prediction I have made on this site!

Also, I said the Lions were legit and that, prior to week 1 against Atlanta, the Falcons were a joke.

Guess I got them flip-flopped.

Bears: 1-15- No good QB's, no RB's, and Berrian's gone. The Bears are indeed WHAT WE THOUGHT THEY WERE, and they'll get crowned by their opponents in brutal fashion every week.
I thought the Bears would be what the Lions were. Ye gods!

Rams: 3-13- Wherefore art thou, Kurt Warner?
I got this one right. How they managed to win twice is beyond me; they got lucky Romo got hurt and that the Redskins overestimated them!

Perhaps we should have had TWO 0-16 teams!

"Daze Of Our Lions" Record setting edition

Well they did it. Cemented their names in the record books for eternity.

The record setting performances:

0-16 I may not live long enough to see this record equaled or bettered.

4 - The number of 100 yd. performances by the Packers. 2 receiving, 2 rushing. This has never been done in the NFL till yesterday!

Seen at Lambeau -

A Geico "Caveman" wearing a Kitna jersey holding a sign that said - "0-16, so easy the Lions can do it!"

By the numbers -

132.2 - Aaron Rodgers' QB rating yesterday. And his receivers dropped at least 5 catchable throws.

110.9 - Opponents QB rating for the season. No QB in the league has a rating over 110 this season.

30 - The Lions total offense ranking in the NFL 268 yds. per game

32 - The Lions total defense ranking this season. 404 yds per game.

16.8 - Points per game for the offense. 27th in the league. we didn't score over 25 pts. in any single game.

32.3 - Points per game the defense gave up. 32nd in the NFL. If they gave up 17 more yesterday, they would have set an NFL season record.

It should be pretty clear from those numbers why they went 0-16.

2 - Number of penalties assessed the Lions for "Taunting" Are you kidding me? They're 0-15 and losing the game, and they have the audacity to taunt their opponent? Even if they were ahead by 40, they should have kept their mouths shut.

Highlights -

5 picks in the first 85 of the 2009 draft. Now we just need a GM and a scouting staff that knows sh*t from shinola.

Quote of the day -

Jeff Backus LT - "Everybody in this locker room that is here today can hold there heads high because they really handled it well with class, It sucks that we're 0-16, but the way the guys handled it, you can appreciate that. Everybody should be able to look in the mirror and be able to say to themselves they did everything they could to get a win and not let this happen."

OK Jeff. That and a dime won't get you a cup of coffee, but you hang on to that. He said this with a straight face, too.

I think Jeff is hoping he too can get out of Detroit finally !

Got some random thoughts on yesterday's season-ending week:

1. The Broncos are VERY lucky Dallas lost the way they did. Normally, Denver's monumental collapse- 3-game lead with 3 games left and getting bitch-slapped twice- would get wall-to-wall coverage. Luckily for them, the circus that is the Cowboys fell apart and dominated the headlines.

2. Is there a more cursed kicker than Ryan Lindell? Misses a long game-tying FG against the Browns, doinks two kicks against the 49ers, and has a few kicks blown by the wind yesterday against the Pats.

3. New England has played well recently, but those losses- Miami, Jets, Chargers, Steelers- are what did them in.

4. The fact that the Chiefs won twice is remarkable. They were lucky they played the wimpy Broncos and that the Raiders tried a trick play gone awry. Honestly, I think they could have, and SHOULD HAVE, also gone 0-16. HD was right when he said this was the wimpiest defense ever- 9 sacks as a team, Jared Allen had 14.5 by HIMSELF. I guess the Chiefs didn't go to Jared!

5. IMO, Cleveland's downfall was due to two things; injuries and a brutally hard schedule (AFC South, NFC East). Next year, they get the tissue-soft AFC West and so-so NFC North.

6. I don't think Mangini deserved to get fired. I know Sandra will state her case, but the Broncos also had a HUGE collapse, yet Shanahan isn't going anywhere. Also, Herman Edwards and Jim Haslett had 7 and 10 game losing streaks, respectively, yet aren't going anywhere?!

7. It's amazing how one year changes everything. Cleveland was a team on the rise, and the Dolphins, Ravens, and Falcons were nothing short of pathetic jokes. Oh, my- did I get this one wrong.

8. IMO, the Steelers defense is as good as any as I've seen in a while. Considering how Mike Tomlin came from the Vikings, known for having AMAZING rush defense, I now know why they hired him.

9. Who's YOUR choice for biggest disappointment? Dallas will be the trendy pick, but at least they finished above .500- Green Bay and Jacksonville can't say that!

10. Another year, another playoff-less season for the Bills. The last time they made the playoffs- 1999, also the last time the Lions made the playoffs. Hell, their Wild-Card losses were both on the same day!

1. Congratulations to all the playoff bound teams. This year there will be 7 teams participating in the playoffs that didn't last year. The NFL and Parity have become monotonous.

2. '08: Detroit Lions- "Woe & 16"! My regards Lions fans.

5. During the 2nd quarter, Willie Parker fired a football into the crowd after scoring a TD. Will he be fined $10,000? A NY Jets DE got fined for as much last week for doing the same with snow.

6. Did anyone see the challenging elements at The Ralph yesterday? With every kick going "wide right", it was yet another reminder to the unfortunate letdown during Super Bowl XXV. What did the Bills do to deserve this cruel torture?

8. The other great turnaround story goes to the Atlanta Falcons. In '07 this team was in shambles. They lost their franchise QB after being involved in an illegal dog fighting ring, their Head Coach quit in the middle of the season and their GM was fired. In '08, Atlanta hired a no-name HC and GM. They drafted Matt Ryan to be their QB and signed Michael Turner as their new running back. After going 4-12 in '07, the Falcons improved to 11-5 and a Wild Card birth this year. Very impressive considering the circumstances from just a year ago.

10. I am now reading reports of Mangini (Jets) and and Marinelli (Lions) being fired. Romeo Crennel is expected to be fired as well later on this afternoon. I think it's pretty clear now that Bill Belichick is the Football Czar in New England. All of his notable coordinators (Mangini, Crennel and Weis) haven't been able to sniff similar success when they tried to branch out on their own.

11. I really wish the Lions played the Chiefs this year. While everyone piles on the Lions and deservingly so, the Chiefs have been the worse team in the last 2 years. In '07, the Chiefs had 4 wins. In '08 they had 2. Hell, at least the Lions had 7 wins last year, more than the Chiefs had been able to compile in both seasons.

12. So now that the Jets season is over, when does all of the over-saturated Favre/retirement talk begin?

Also, they were the last time to lose to Detroit.

2. Is there a more cursed kicker than Ryan Lindell? Misses a long game-tying FG against the Browns, doinks two kicks against the 49ers, and has a few kicks blown by the wind yesterday against the Pats.

Yes. Scott Norwood.

3. New England has played well recently, but those losses- Miami, Jets, Chargers, Steelers- are what did them in.

The fact that the Pats missed out on the playoffs is indeed unfortunate. There is so much to be said about how they rebounded nicely once Cassel became acclimated. This team could've easily gave up on the season after losing their star-franchise QB. Yet another testament to the football genius that is Coach Belickick.

Actually, they had 1 sack yesterday, bringing the season total to 10. Either way, that breaks the record for fewest sacks in a season (previously 11, by the 1982 Colts).

5. IMO, Cleveland's downfall was due to two things; injuries and a brutally hard schedule (AFC South, NFC East). Next year, they get the tissue-soft AFC West and so-so NFC North.

Those were 2 of the biggest culprits, you're right.

Mangini is a white Romeo Crennel. Both are drone offspring of Bill Belichick and can't survive on their own. Neither will have success as a head coach in this league.

7. It's amazing how one year changes everything. Cleveland was a team on the rise, and the Dolphins, Ravens, and Falcons were nothing short of pathetic jokes. Oh, my- did I get this one wrong.

Parity my friend. There are teams that can turn their fortunes rather quickly in this leage. However, it's the teams that win consistently year in and year out that deserve the praise.

8. IMO, the Steelers defense is as good as any as I've seen in a while. Considering how Mike Tomlin came from the Vikings, known for having AMAZING rush defense, I now know why they hired him.

The Steelers always seem to have a good Defense, so this is no surprise. What is surprising though, is that they usually have a good rushing attack to go along with their defense. This year however, the Steelers rank 23rd in rushing. The lack of a running game and the O-Line's inability to protect their QB will come back to haunt them in the playoffs. Mark my words.

9. Who's YOUR choice for biggest disappointment? Dallas will be the trendy pick, but at least they finished above .500- Green Bay and Jacksonville can't say that!

Packers are a good choice. They were 1 game away from the Super Bowl last year. This year they're below .500!

10. Another year, another playoff-less season for the Bills. The last time they made the playoffs- 1999, also the last time the Lions made the playoffs. Hell, their Wild-Card losses were both on the same day!

I feel for you bro.

2. Is there a more cursed kicker than Ryan Lindell? Misses a long game-tying FG against the Browns, doinks two kicks against the 49ers, and has a few kicks blown by the wind yesterday against the Pats.

Yes. Scott Norwood.

I meant cursed ACTIVE kickers.

Until now, the last time I recall a kicker being so jinxed was in 2005, when Jay Feely missed 3 possible winning field-goals in Seattle.
