NEW software on Wally?

You don’t think that the newest ota dongle wouldn’t be better than that over 10 year old ota module the 722k has?
Actually, I do think that. (Note that I interpreted that sentence literally with the double-negative ("don't" and "wouldn't")) :biggrin

I mean we get newer processors and chip sets with the latest receivers , it would make sense to me that the newer dongle would be a little more up to date and maybe it would work better to deflect old multi path rejection that my parents seem to suffer from one of their vhf channels and sub channels. Back in 07 we were just barely getting started with hd . It had only been four years since some of the first ota channels in hd started . Shouldn’t of things improved by now? My parents Phillips hdtv has an ota tuner in it and they can get all the hd channels with out drop outs, like the 722k seems to suffer. So if TVs get better with reception issues shouldn’t DISH ota equipment improve too?
Honestly, I may not be the right person to ask about this. I live in an area with very poor OTA reception, so I am just judging by the number of fringe-area (distant) OTA stations that I have been able to scan into the list with each type of Dish OTA tuner. I always seem to get more stations to at least try to come in with the 722k module than with any other tuner. (The old single-tuner dongle could give the module a run for its money, but I didn't use the single-tuner dongle over a long enough span of time to judge if it is really that much better.) I live only a few miles from the only VHF station that I have ever been able to pick up with a digital tuner, so I usually get good reception of that station. I use older HDTV's (from around 2008) so I can't speak to the reception on newer TV's tuners, either.

Well I tried what some suggested and tried again to connect the single ota tuner to my Wally after a reboot and it worked. But I went ahead and put the dual ota dongle back on the Wally and moved the single tuner ota dongle back on my Hopper. I can still test the Wally and use the hopper for the one ota channel or two we record everyday. So I looked at the recordings made yesterday and last night and they played fine. This Wally is a lot like my hopper 3 ,but not as fast as the hopper. I think after tonight I will check and see if the recordings all play that I will record today and tonight. If all is well I will move this Wally to my parents house and set it up. I can wait for my ota dual tuner dongle to come in the mail next week since I found that I only have one conflict using the single vs the dual .

Try this, if you haven't already. Make sure all OTA channels are removed, then shut down and unplug the previous tuner. Then unplug the Wally for a minute and restart. Then, while the Wally is on and you are watching a show, plug in the OTA tuner. My personal experience is that USB accessories seem to get recognized easier when added after a cold start and when the unit is already turned on. I find the same is true with USB accessories on my computers.
Thanks, it worked. :hatsoff

Honestly, in today's throw-away society, cutting costs and features to maximize profits, I don't think newer would be better in many products.
I hope you are wrong in this case. I have been dealing with multi path rejection issues with my parents on this one station since the flip to all hd on ota channels in 2010.

Deep fringe antenna to get directionality?
We have tried all kinds of antennas and the only one that works great was a small kind that I bought off the DISH website store. The little flat wave when attached to an outer window or wall gives great solid strengths for all his channels. The problem is the wires are not long enough and my parents don’t want to see any coax run in front of their corner brick fireplace. I’ve also tried to run more coax through the attic but it still didn’t get a signal . Don’t even get me started on the wall fish we tried to do. My parent’s house is a single story house in the middle of two 2 story houses. The signal for their CBS station seems to bounce off the house on the side where the sat dish and ota antenna is located and cause multi path rejection. But the Phillips hdtv gets all the ota channels without drop outs using the same antenna. So I really hoping that this new ota dongle will work with the Wally at their house.

I will say this about the Wally and the OTA dongle: when the Wally loses the OTA signal, there is no longer any signal loss pop-up, just a black screen. With the old software (U420) loss of OTA signal would result in the exact same pop-up that occurred when the satellite signal was lost. I could see how that could be confusing, so at least in that respect, the new software is better.

Well I hooked the Wally to my parents house tv and then spent forever on the phone waiting from someone from DISH to come on the line. After the 20 minute wait time for tech support , I hung up. I then recalled and went through the upgrade dept. Nice girl from Texas came on the line and she impressed me with the fact she knew what to do and I didn't make it easy. I first asked to take the Wally off my regular account and move it to my second account. She said : Sure , no problem. Then there was a problem. We couldn't move the Wally off till I paid the $6.34 added for putting the Wally on three days ago. So I said pay it with the credit card on file. She did and said ok we have the Wally removed and now we will add it to your 2nd account for my parents house. She said OH ,oh another problem, it won't let you put a Wally and a Vip 722k on the same account. I said no problem we wanted to remove the Vip 722k anyway and replace with the Wally. She said Ok , no problem . Ok then I told her that I wanted to turn it into a dvr and she said Ok that would be $40.00 since this account has never had any 211ks on it that were dvrs before. I said use the credit card on file and pay it. She did and then the programming was activated -after I did a hard reboot and we were up and running.

All the ota channels showed up since I had scanned them at my house. In fact while I waited for the programming to be downloaded and the receiver switched , we watched the ota channels and they never lost the guide even. Now to the one Uhf channel for CBS channel 6, that I always have problems with multi path rejection. I went into the ota menu to check signal strengths and it showed 100% for channel 6 CBS. I said HOT DAMN! Then I went back in to the ota menu to take some channels out and when I hit on Channel 6 again , it said 79% and was now yellow. Suddenly the channel went from IN the guide side to the left side OUT and dropped off. So I rescanned again and it came back at 100% so I saved it and got out of that menu entirely. We then watched channel 6 most of the three hours I was over there and it didn't drop off. So I think as long as we never enter the ota menu again, hopefully channel 6 CBS will stay locked. Now I told my Dad to use the satellite delivered CBS from Houston for recording any prime time shows. He only watches the ota CBS from Beaumont for the local news during the evening anyway.

My Dad decided that he now prefered the Modern Black guide instead of the Blue and white one. So he likes that he now can see it better. Both mom and dad were a little confused with the new remote controls but I spent a lot of time working with them and stressing the few buttons they needed to remember: Back, Options, Home ,Dvr, Info and to look at the TV activity menu to see what is recording on what tuners. First new receiver they have had in like 8 years. This is just what I needed to transition them from the Vip receivers to the Wally/hopper class of receivers and we didn't have to run new coax for ota since you can diplex signals for sat and ota on the same coax, unlike the Hopper.

When I had problems adding Channel 6 in the past, I went in and added it manually. I think it is broadcast on Channel 25.

My problem when in Beaumont is getting the two VHF channels. My antenna favors UHF. I think they are Channels 12.1 and 12.2, commonly known as Channels 12 and 50. They are the ABC and NBC local stations and both are VHF. Not much on them that I watch anyway so I can just watch them on satellite when needed.

Did I miss something? I thought I could add a Wally to my current VIP setup any time I chose. :(
