You can pickup an iPad 2 for about $300 from eBay. It's 2 generations (almost 3) behind and if it's the 16gb version it's not worth much. You can't even buy these new anymore, only refurb.

I believe the iPad 2 came with a cellular radio on some models. Those are more expensive so I doubt those are the ones being given away.
Not sure what you mean by that. I have a 3rd gen iPad and the 4th gen has been out for several months. The 5th gen will be coming out soon, hence my comment about this being 'almost' 3 generations behind at this point.

Yes, but not sure why anyone would when you can get a 3rd gen unit for almost the same price. I agree with someone earlier who posted this is a way for Apple to clear out the warehouse of old units (in preparation for the new iPad later this year) and for Dish to save money on new sub promos. I'm sure they're not paying anything close to what they're giving up in discounts.
Maybe it's terminology. You are saying an Ipad, I'm looking at an Ipad2 in the promotion and on Amazon. That's not a new unit?

I'm confused as to why any of you care. It's a promotion for new customers and they get a great product for FREE! Why is it always turned into a huge conspiracy.
I do try to understand these things so when someone contends Dish is or is not doing something I know for sure. I just think it makes a difference if it's an older no longer sold unit being given away, or a new one. I didn't think of this discussion as a conspiracy, I think a couple of us are curious what the deal is, if not for me for someone who may ask me....
Apple does still sell these new. That doesn't mean this is the newest generation. When the 3rd generation iPad came out they dropped the number and just called it iPad. Apple continued selling the iPad 2 at $400 as a lower priced entry model. The 3rd generation iPad was sold for $500.
When the 4th Generation iPad came out they discontinued the iPad 3 and called it the iPad with Retina. The continued to sell the iPad 2 as the lower cost model instead of using the iPad 3 for that purpose. This is most likely because the iPad 4 was a much smaller jump forward over the iPad 3 than any of their previous releases. There wasn't much changed between 3 and 4.
So yes. These probably are brand new in box apple devices that apple still sells. They are still 2 generations behind though.
I don't see why you are getting so defensive here. I have repeatedly said that I don't think this is a terrible deal but it isn't something I would take. The point of the Dish section of this website is to talk about what Dish is doing. I don't think I'm doing anything wrong by expressing my opinion about their new promotion. My opinion is that people would be better off taking the discount and putting that money towards the current generation iPad if they want an iPad.
The only reason I get defensive is because I see customers find a negative in almost everything. We had a customer that came in once for a small part and we just have it to him for free. His response was, is that the best you can do. Customers are programmed to ask for more.
When they complain I say I can charge you more and the offer a larger discount. It turns out to be the same final price. They usually just laugh.
Who cares if its a older 2nd generation model, as I'm still intrigued by it even though owning it for a year and a half ago, This is the type of promo that retailers would definitely be clamoring for, We all know they wouldn't give out 3rd or 4th generation models for free as expected.
The so called iPad 2 is still quite a good unit.
Even the 16gb Wi-Fi iPad 2 is elegantly functional in the presence of a Wi-Fi network and it is eminently cheaper to use because there are no cellular charges.
Wi-Fi is often quicker than 4G and 4G is only needed when you are out of range of a connected Wi-Fi source.
iPad 64GB with cellular is one of the biggest boondoggles - the phone companies love it because they can suck your wallet dry with data and Apple loves it because they can charge you $200 more for the device that has $50 more memory in it.
I use a 16gb Wi-Fi only unit all the time and it works just fine.
If I'm out of Wi-Fi range I use my Android phone.
