if they don't upgrade my 2 811's free of charge to a 211/411 after making this mistake of a anouncement I'm gone!!!! I come home and read that Feb 1st new HD/VOOM is MPEG4? This is total BS!!!!!

Any word on whether this will be somewhere other than 129 degrees?

I bet you guys who work for this site didn't even have the gall to ask why? I've been with Cox, Comcast and Charter cable in the past and never had a problem over losing channels, needing to pay high $$$$ for new stuff to get the channels....This is LUDERCRIS

Hey now, dont kill the messanger :) Scott has not been on sence the E* press confrence :) As soon as we can pick his brain and pass on info to you we will :) But for now there is no reason to cry over spilt milk that hasnt been spilt yet (We dont know the plans so anything is possable) Chill out have a good weekend and monday if things go our way we will be praising E*.. If they dont then OFF WITH THERE HEADS :) j/k :) I too am wondering the upgrade plann as everyone else :)

Well seeing how Dish has always worked now I know why I never went with sat for the longest time. I think they are not going to have a good plan for us. I think they will charge us up the ying yang for mpeg4. Well I have Heather Black as well as others numbers and I'm going to see if I can get anything out of them.

Lets hope so.........

I read the announcement on the link someone provided. It did not provide specific information about what Dish was going to do about receiver upgrades. Specifically about recently purchased or leased 942s or 811s.

If someone has a 2+ year old 921, then I can understand Dish considering that to be "consumed" technology and offering only a $250-$300 upgrade path. Just like computers and cell phones are consumed technologies. It will get some people mad, but it is still providing a subsidized upgrade path for an older piece of gear.

This argument doesn't fly on gear less than a year old. If someone bought a 942 for $700 six months ago, then Dish would be knifing them in the back if the only upgrade option is a $300 lease plan. Something like a $200 exchange, with the Dish customer still owning the gear, would be more appropriate. For someone who leased a 942 for $250 six months ago, I would think the most Dish should charge is a $99 lease upgrade.

If Dish leases someone a 942 for $250 and then turns around and partially obsoletes that equipment and offers only a $300 lease upgrade option, then Dish is essentially telling the customer "Up Yours!" and proving that they do not value their established higher-end customer base.

But, as I wrote earlier, they have not yet said these things.

I will wait to see what Dish decides to do. If they decide to screw us, then I will dramatically cut back on my subscription services. I have a contract to fulfill and so would not jump yet, but I can certainly cut my monthly bill by $50/mon. Hopefully it won't come to that.

811 upgrade to MPEG4 receiver

I just called E* and spoke to CSR about upgrading my 811 receiver. She advised I would be able to upgrade (for a fee), but E* would not have MPEG4 receivers until March 2006.

Dish Network Press Release said:
DISH Network is also introducing at CES a new series of satellite receivers that combine MPEG4 and MPEG2 signal capability. The cutting-edge ViP Series combines state-of-the-art imaging technology with life-like Dolby(R) Digital 5.1 surround sound for the best picture and sound quality available. Existing customers with MPEG2 equipment, such as the DISH Player DVR 942, will continue to receive all their current content and will need to upgrade to a ViP Series receiver to receive the new HD channels. DISH Network will offer a convenient upgrade package for existing customers who want to expand their HD lineup to include the new channels.
This implies that all existing HD customers will have a "convenient" upgrade path. Convenient, hopefully means low cost, but it could also mean $800 bucks conveniently ordered by telephone. I got a real bad feeling about this. Hope I'm wrong. Having said all that, I'm with everyone else. I am shocked and dismayed that they would release new content now in MPEG-4 which very few people can receive, especially ESPN2-HD. Ofcourse they could have cut a heck of deal with ESPN on this one. I can almost hear the negotitations . . . "we should get this for nearly free because none of subscribers will be able to watch it". If a tree falls in the forest, and no one hears it, does it still make any sound?
I'm sorry Dish, this was a real bone head move. Really!

Am I wrong in saying that everyone who receives Dishnetwork HD programing currently, will still be receiving the exact same programming using their existing receivers on Feb 1.

In other words come Feb 1 for existing subscribers nothing has changed including the price.

Dish stated in the press release that an upgrade path would be provided for existing customers. Why don't we give them a chance to let us know what the plans are before we threaten to jump ship.

The E* press release says that we can get the entire 25 channel DishHD lineup + more than 70 SD channels plus locals in SD and HD for $54.99. The 25 HD channels include HBO HD, Showtime HD, ESPN2 HD, and Universal HD. The Americas Top 60+ with SD local channels is $36.99. It appears that the charge for the 25 HD channels with HD locals is $18.00 per month, which is not bad. Maybe it will be less if you subscribe to the better packages.
I'm going to get a ViP 211 soon (will be looking for upgrade deals) and enjoy more HD. The 622 is scheduled for the first quarter, which probably means May. Will pick one of those up when available if given a decent deal. It certainly appears that E* will be the HD leader for some time!

AT60 with locals starting Feb. 1st is going to be $34.99. I do not think you will get the HBO and Showtime HD channels included in that package. I believe you have to subscribe to the HBO package to get HBO HD and the Showtime package to get Showtime HD. It looks like there will be a $20 difference.

I wonder when the family package will be announced. Maybe they can throw in some HD with that. Nah, I asked for too much.

It appears that VOOM is expanding to 15 channels and channels like ESPN2 and Universal are being added to the HD Pack and that this is going to be combined into a single HD service offering for around $18-$20 a month.

I expect an increase in price of the HD package everytime there is a signifigant enough increase in channels added to the package (or maybe a different bundling to where its split up into different bundles). They are probably going to use part of the cost of the HD package that they are charging the consumers to offset part of the cost of they will have in the hardware. The DVR fee helps in addition to this.

Lets say they can make $10 off the HD package and then $6 DVR fee. There's $16 per month, $192 per year, $384 for two years, $576 in three years (assuming there are no price increases over this period of time). This does not account the additional HD channels that will be launched. I am not sure if most consumers are going to accept this additional cost and will probably expect these HD channels to become part of the packages that their SD counterparts are in. I wonder if this will increase those SD packages at all.

The new programming charts has HBO & Showtime HD in the DISH HD Silver Package at $64.99
Here's the link to the chart:

If you look very closely at that chart, you will see that the "Military Channel" is in the sports category. Charlie must not have ever been in combat!!!

Also, do not see Cinemax. Does that mean that we will have to pay extra for the other movie channels that are now part of the AEP?

Ok, they better give free or sweet delas to go MPEG4. Who will start a new petion thread? I love my 942, but I want the Voom channels. This is a bunch of crap!
