Ok, so I figured I could save money by getting the new Dish HD only package, (I have to have Dish anyway for my wife's Italian channels) and using directv for my son's channels (Family) and my soccer (Sports Pack). If I pay the full $99 DVR lease fee, can I subscribe without a 2 year commitment?

you would have to own all your equip (about four times the lease fee price) and do your own install. even then, it would be a tough conversation to get it activated too.

He could always pay $$$$ for someone to install that for him, but that would cost him a lot, especially for the cables and other stuff the installer is going to be using.
Buying equipment is a good idea if DirecTV is not planning to upgrade their receivers within the next 2-3 years...they usually upgrade their stuff every 2 years at least...
Renting equipment = the best option, you could always trade in what you have and get the latest and the greatest in the market instead of being stuck with an old receiver out of date.

Even if you intend to cancel sooner than 24 month, it should still be better to lease for $99 and carry the contract. Early termination cost is $20/mo. x months left on your contract.
