As for debit cards, a consumer’s maximum responsibility for debit card fraud charges is $50 under the law, if you notify the bank within two business days after learning of the theft or loss of a debit card.
That liability can jump to $500 afterward. And under the law, you’d have unlimited liability if you fail to report the fraud charges more than 60 calendar days after your statement is sent to you.
