Really? Seems like a waste of a hard drive on an under-powered machine. What do you need more space for?
I've done it many times. On some computers (like Dell Latitude) it's very easy to do: just a couple of screws at the bottom, and then it slides out: takes just a couple of minutes. But on some computers it's much more work: sometimes you have to remove the keyboard, etc.
I suggest you search the Internet on how to replace a hard drive in your specific brand/model. You can often find detailed instructions or even YouTube demonstrations.

On netbooks it's doable too, but I wouldn't bother! Replace the whole thing!

Taking my netbook only, leaving my notebook for CES (probably regret it) but last year packing notebook & netbook got tiresome thru the TSA crap ...
I have installed a new disk and more memory in a netbook before. It is quite an experience. Before you think about doing it go over to youtube and find your netbook being taken apart. There seems to be people videoing their hardware upgrades all the time. It will help to find out what snaps apart and what screws are needed to be taken out. Plus they will show things like if the memory is soldered on or something like that.
If your netbook is a Dell, you can find the service manual on their site with all the gory details.
Most of the netbooks have one RAM slot and some have up to half a GB onboard (probably your case).
The slot most off the time can handle 2GB but often won't offer such option when buying new (unless it's a business model).
Hard drives are most of the time standard 160GB 5400rpm (if not older than 2 years).
But to get access to either you often have to practically take apart the whole thing.
It is rumored to be the requirement of Microsoft: to get a cheap Windows license you have to make the upgrade hard (if not impossible).
Be careful with upgrading to a 7200rpm drive: those often generate more heat.
