Neophyte wants to learn the ABCs

Hi.
I am new to this site and to the incredibly vast and ever exciting field of satellite communications.
Everyone has to start somewhere, right?
Can any of you 'Brahmins of Knowlege out there suggest an up to date, dork-friendly primer that can also be a reference book? Basically, I'd like a book that can still be useful once I've mastered some of the basics.
