There is a small piece of cable (approx. 6") with connections on each end...one connects to the coax from the dish, the other connects to the HD receiver...I have had this small piece replaced 3x by directv repairman what is the name of this piece and what does it do and can I purchase one myself?

if so, yes you can replace that yourself. Ebay might be a good place to purchase on the cheap.

If you are talking about the BBC cable then it doesn't have any specific name except that it is simply a short RG6 cable. BTW, it doesn't have to be 6" long, you can use any short RG6 cable as a replacement.
The only reason I can see that this cable would failed 3 times is that it was probably bent very tightly in a U shape and with time the center conductor simply digs into the insulation and eventually shorts to the shield.

Like upsss mentioned, the problem could be the coax being bent too far. Make sure it's got enough room and you should be good.
Yes, DirecTV should send those out to you for free with no issue whatsoever. When they were first introduced, they came in small boxes that forced the cable to be bent back. Apparently, that was an issue, causing the cable to break, as the last ones I received from DirecTV were in a footlong box with the cable properly stretched out from the BBC.
Except many people have to put them on the recvr and make them fit in thier cabinets and have no choice but to bend them backwards.
I was in a situation like that and decided to buy a few angle coax fittings so I could point then up and make a straight connection instead of the bent one that was originally required.
