I don't really know but I saw a couple launches from the beach when I was in school in FL. and it really is something to see once, day or night.
I could see it going up from my back yard here in Augusta, GA. It sure was bright and very easy to see.

It was a good landing, I do wish Lou Dobbs would be quiet though instead of babbling on the whole time...
I got to watch the Discovery deorbit and landing this afternoon, as much of a thrill as the launch. The landing track path was just north of Houston (on the way to Florida) and the NASA announcer had said we might be able to hear the twin sonic booms, and I am pretty sure I heard them right at 4:20 p.m. (CST), two quick light thunders (absolutely clear sky). I live in the southwest Houston area.
Also interesting in that I watch the 'live' broadcast on the NASA channel (DISH 213) on my TV2 and also the (12 second delayed) HDNET broadcast on TV1. I agree that the HDNET announcer talks too much. And you get to see a lot more of the deorbit and landing progress on the NASA channel. Good stuff all around, proud to be an American!
