msg and msg+ wil they give in

If Dish dropped ESPN they'd be slitting their own throat, I'm sorry but it's true, they'd lose 50-60% of their customer base overnight. Anyone who is a sports fan would leave, and I'm not even talking hard core sports fan, I think anyone who likes sports in general would leave. Not to mention they'd probably only gain 1 out of 10 of the customers they would have gotten if they still had ESPN.

With Dish dropping RSN's to keep costs down, having networks like ESPN for highlights of those teams you can no longer see is all that more important.

In an article in this mornings D&C here in Rochester it was stated that the viewership for the Sabres has dropped from 57000 to just 20000 since the blackout began. A drop of 67%.

Wonderhow many viers they lost from Dish?

Early on in the dispute there was an article that stated that there were less than 5000 Dish subs in Western NY but did not say how many were lost after Dish dropped MSG last October. They only stated that the losses were "significant". I'll try to dig up the reference.

BTW, I think the 5000 Dish subs number sounds really low. I was skeptical of it at the time I read it.

Way back in this thread, I said I heard either on WGRZ-TV or WIVB-TV that DISH's number was 3,000 subs in WNY.....which seemed really low.

This double hits them because when they sell advertising they sell gross rating points (GRPs). So, if only 1/3 the audience means that they lose 2/3 of their ad dollars. It will not take long for MSG to reallly be hurting.

I wonder how that would work for me. I live in Erie, and I switched from TWC to Dish because TWC dropped Empire/MSG from their line up here and said that it was too far away for Sabres (they show Pens games here) I went to Dish because both Dish/DirecTV give you Buffalo/Pitt/Cleveland RSN's. Fios isn't an option as it's not offered. I know I can't get the Center Ice on Dish because of black outs for sabres games. But since TWC here didn't view the sabres as a "local" team and had no way of getting their games, does mean the games wouldn't be blacked on center ice if I went to TWC?

Is there a chart or map that shows how far away you need to be from an NHL city to not be considered "local" for black out rules??

I caught this post, and apologize for the delay in getting you an answer about the scope of network coverage.

Thank your for all the info. Still doesn't really help me all that much

1. Gamefinder tool is not real useful to me since you don't carry MSG any more so the Sabres games don't even show up on the list, and when they do (opponents feed) the game is always blacked out. IMO if you don't offer the RSN that teams games are on, then They should not be blacked out if you PAY for the NHL Center ice package.

2. Thanks for that link, is there anyway to make those maps larger so you can actually see them? I have a 24" monitor and I can't tell where the edges of the "grey" coverage area's are. It looks like I'm on the very edge of the teams coverage, but can't really tell.

3. Same as #2, map is way too small to see anything.

4. That page doesn't tell me anything I didn't already know. I'm in the MSG rights area, so since you don't carry MSG I have no options to view Sabres games, even by paying extra for NHL Center ice as all those games would be blacked out. So my only option to get Sabres games is to Switch to a different provider. :(

One more question on item #2 the Team coverage maps, is this determined by the League, the Team or the provider? I ask because like I said Time Warner Cable in my area didn't offer MSG for Sabres games as they felt it wasn't local enough. You guys did offer MSG as a local RSN though. So that tells me either they just didn't want to follow that map, or you guys use different maps.

Thank you for the response and trying to help, I appreciate it.

If you've already paid for NHLCI and dont want to switch you could "move" to Cleveland or Pittsburgh and receive the Sabres via NHLCI. You would only receive the SD feed however because of the dispute between DISH and MSG. The only down side is that you end up with Cleveland or Pittsburgh locals.

wouldn't be so bad, I already pull in my locals via antenna anyway to take advantage of using them as a 3rd tuner. But I don't already subscribe to NHLCI

I may have to really look in to this.

You could get center ice via ROKU (IPTV) but you you would have to obtain IP spoofing program to make it look like you were out of the MSG territory..or just "Move" to a grey area on that coverage map

By some fluke I was able to watch the Sabres/Leafs game on my iPad (via Gamecenter App) on Tuesday without IP spoofing. Must have been a problem with iPad location services because I could not stream the same game through the same router using my AppleTV or computer.

I like how they state as fact that Dish has exited the RSN market in NY. Yes that appears to be true but apparently spurred by disputes such as this. Dish has never made any statement that I am aware of that this was part of some programming strategy. I liked the comment that said the common denominator in these disputes is MSG and also I like the way they totally ducked the question of when their deals with Fios and DirecTv expire. This concept of only wanting the carriers to pay what they feel is a fair value for their content is the biggest line of BS you'll ever hear.

Replay of the chat between Buffalo News and MSG. Pure venom being directed at MSG by Sabres fans. Plus, MSG's take on DISH business strategy to exit NY RSN market.

Chat with MSG Networks at 2:30 p.m. Friday - Sabres Edge - The Buffalo News

I like how they make it seem like Dish wanted to get out of the NY RSN market, I don't think that's the case at all, I think it's more that Dish would have done a deal had MSG/Yes not wanted over priced deals. I think had they made a reasonable offer those RSN's would be on Dish.

And I like how MSG keeps saying this over and over again.

Dan Ronayne:
CR - Fuse is a footnote to this at best. This is just another smokescreen by TWC - this had nothing to do with Fuse. Very simply this is about reaching a fair agreement with Time Warner, which again, we've tried to do for two years - we are simply asking that they recognize the value of our programming the same as other distributors in the Buffalo market.
Really?? 50% of the distributors in Buffalo think you're asking for way too much money and have decided to take a stand against your increases. Next year it could very possibly be 75% At what point will they realize that they're over valuing their network.

Also the talk of Ranger/Islanders/Knicks games are moot. I don't know about you guys but for me all those games are blacked out when they're on anyway. So MSG airs useless programming to me 90% of the time. The only thing on MSG that is of any interest to me is the Sabres broadcasts. Because of this why can't MSG work a separate deal with TWC for the NYC area market and the Buffalo area market?

WFAN host Mike Francessa to interview rep from MSG regarding this dispute. Today at 5:30. Had TWC on at 4:00 today, MSG to respond. TWC rep claimed MSG offered 6.5 % increase in December, verbal agreement then MSG renegged and demanded 53% increase.

Radio.com

I posted this in the TWC area, but thought some dish people might be interested. Some callers are talking about it right now. Francessa is saying they are going to have an exec from MSG in studio at 5:30.
