mpg2 - mpg4 and tps expert summary please?

I've read so many allusions to who has which and had if first, could someone, who is pretty sure of there facts, give me a very quick rundown on when mpeg4 started on DBS? About the only thing I think I know for sure is that E* started with mpeg2 and now is making mpeg4 receivers and says all future HD will be mpeg4. And that 622 & 722 are the only HD DVRs at the moment that are mpeg4 able.

And the other thing that gets alluded to every once-in-a-while in lots of threads is how E* doesn't have enough transponder space to match the D* target of 100 HD channels. Can someone, who again is pretty sure of their facts, give me an idea (doesn't have to be accurate down to the nat's ass) of how much room on the three middle sat positions there is to actually add HD channels? And if your fingers aren't too tired, explain what the next sat will add.

I'm sorry I don't see how to get the answer to any of my questions from those links. And I'm the opposite of the kind of expert I'm looking to hear from.

Mpeg 4 and Mpeg 2 are encription methods. They are how the signals are compressed. Yes a long time ago dish was doing mpg2 for all services. It wasnt untill early last year, that they started to do mpeg 4 for hd programming, and all future programming will be in mpg4. Mpeg 4 allows dish to get more out of the space they have available.

As far as dish matching directv. Its a debate. Dish does have plenty of space available, but they have done nothing. I'm not counting tbs hd, because everyone knows what is going on with TBS HD here and How that got added.

Not sure how much space if left, but Dish just added 12 HD channels for NBA, include that with NHL and TBS, seems like Dish must have some space left until the next bird is launched.

It depends on what you want to believe. If you want to believe:

1) E* will convert the remaining mpeg2 channels to mpeg4 there's some channels.

2) E* has the encoders to covert the HD locals to 6 a transponder there's more channels.

3) E* can light up unused transponder on 61.5 and 129 there are more potential channels.

I disagree with goaliebob on number 3. I don't think there's enough power in that satellite to light up new transponders at acceptable signal strength. Heck, many people would argue they aren't putting out enough power on the existing transponders.

If I remember from other threads correctly, E* can put up about 12 new HD channels pretty quickly. With the delay in launching of E11 and AMC14, D* has a short-term advantage. That advantage will disappear after E*'s birds get off the ground.

They didn't add a single HD channel for the NBA or NHL. Those are just virtual channel maps to point to the existing HD RSN channel.

MPEG2 and MPEG4 have nothing to do with encryption.

These are not encryption they are compression techniques.

Keep in mind, much of the "HD" DirecTV is boasting about, isn't HD at all. It's just upconverted SD. Heck, your TV and receiver can probably do that. I daresay very little genuine HD will be added before Dish gets another sat or two up. A couple of big booms have delayed those launches into 2008. I think at least one would have gone up this month if it weren't for that.

For example, TWC isn't really moving to HD until next year, despite "TWC HD."

I can't say for sure that Dish started with MPEG-4 first, but I can say they've moved quicker with it. First (& best) MPEG-4 HD DVR.

Can't keep chasing the latest claims. You can count on the two providers being similar. Not likely one will ever steal a march of more than a few months on the other.
