This is as close as I have seen to a "HMC"....I guess it flew under the radar, as
the NDS booth was by invite only..........

-------------------------
Home AV Center II - NDS has teamed up with Samsung and Broadcom to demonstrate a prototype home entertainment server system that includes a full suite of NDS software solutions: XTV HomeNet; XTV Ready; and MediaHighway middleware. The server has five tuners, a 300 GB hard drive for storage, IP connectivity, two USB 2.0 ports, router capabilities and VoIP. With the new server, consumers will be able to enjoy High Definition programming in multiple rooms, they can transfer content - such as video, music, games and photos - between the DVR and portable devices, and they can control a range of peripheral devices such as printers and security cameras

HMC=Home Media Center...In effect a home server that allows you to among
other things, record and distribute H/D and other signals around the home.

Honestly, the announcement of the MCE PC tuner kind of kills the HMC train for me. Why have proprietary junk when you can get all of this in a real PC?

I would agree...and when you add what is coming in Vista MCE even more so.

The bottom line is that D* could have had MRV and a product superior to the HMC with the TiVo core. They chose not to do it.:(

Welcome to Rupert Murdoch land, folks. Spend as little as you can and squeeze the customer for every single red cent.

It's how he runs the Fox TV stations, just ask anyone who works at an O&O.

Cheap Charlie's bid for DirecTV looks pretty good about right now!

All the more reason to go with MCE and the Sat tuner card....if it gets too bad a quick call to the cable co and a USB device and off you go.

Maybe we'll get lucky and Vista will enable a Satellite Tuner with an NDS card reader.....

Yeah... We can wish....Maybe the better wish is for cable to get Sunday Ticket.....

:-(

We all can say what we want about Murdock but at least he isn't a cheapskate with the big stuff like the cable companies are. I couldn't stand hearing Comcast say that NFL Sunday Ticket cost too much. Again say what you will but at least Murdock isn't cheap like cable companies.

Has there been any announced ETA for the MCE/Sat tuner card solution? Any speculation?

Only announcement is "this year"

I'd look for it Q4 for the holiday selling season along with Vista

I should note that I'm guessing that the device will be a USB style rather than a PCI card. The Intel/Directv announcment mentioned laptops and we have seen the Cablecard device and it's USB (although it will be available as PCI type card too but even it is conected USB!)

Longhorn: Are you hearing anything more on the HD-DVR? Any idea about when it might be available, what issues remain with making it work, anything? Any scuttlebutt on your end?

I also would like to know any recent news on the new HD-DVR. I talked to retention yesterday and they said mid-year.

The thing that has me bothered is that I plan on having OTA with the receiver for backup from rain fade and a post awhile ago said that the new HD-DVR won't have an ATSC tuner. Any confirmation on that? If that's the case, I'll get the current HD-DVR now instead of waiting.

Since I am on the Ohio - Michigan line I get Toledo OTA. The reason I went with D* is the potential to get Detroit in HD also.

I am disappointed that they are not going to provide UPN or the independents, but if they cut off OTA that takes away any advantage D* has over cable and puts E* on top in my situation.
